End season review: Spring 2017

All pictures credit to their original owners(They are all from key visuals and official sources). I simply edited them together.(It took me a whole day so please credit me at least if you are using it somewhereūüôŹ)

And… it’s over. This season will probably be one of the best seasons in a while. There were ups and downs, surprises and disappointments, but in the end all that matters is that we the watchers enjoy what was given to us, and I have to say I had a fun time watching, especially since this is the first anime season I am watching. I am definitely looking forward to the next season, Summer 2017, and I hope to be able to enjoy it as well!

Now then, onto the actual reviews!

Behind on watching

Quan Zhi Gao Shou

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/33926/Quanzhi_Gaoshou

Expected rating: 6/10

First impressions rating: 8/10

Mid-season rating: 9/10

End-season rating: 8.5/10

The dark horse of season, I unfortunately fell behind with my watching schedule and only watched until episode 7 for now. However, I will finish it sometime when I get the chance. I dropped its rating to 8.5 after thinking more carefully as of the time of writing this, but that is not to say this anime is not good. I thoroughly enjoyed it and although this is definitely a biased review since I am able to understand the chinese context, I still feel that this is a good anime.

I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone however, unless I know that they are able to enjoy it.

One sentence conclusion: Chinese SAO anime breaking expectations worldwide and showing people what it means to be a dark horse.

Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/32951/Rokudenashi_Majutsu_Koushi_to_Akashic_Records

Expected rating: 7/10

First impressions rating: 7/10

Mid-season rating: 8/10

End-season rating: 8.5/10

Well well, look at what we have here. A light novel adaptation that doesn’t suck? Check. Cute girls, including cat girls? Check. Funny moments? Check. Interesting plot? Check. Good animation? Check. Absolutely fantastic ending song? Check. Entertainment value? Check. It may seem typical, but it really isn’t. I had lots of fun watching this anime and discussing about it with my friends, so I’m sure you will too.

Definitely a recommendation from me, give this anime a try. It might just make you fall in love with it.

One sentence conclusion: My precious you for me~

Saenai Heroine no Sodatekata ‚ô≠

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/30727/Saenai_Heroine_no_Sodatekata_%E2%99%AD

Expected rating: 9/10

First impressions rating: 9/10

Mid-season rating: 9/10

End-season rating: 9.9/10

I can’t believe it. I don’t want to believe it. But I have to believe it. On the second season of Saekano, it started off pretty weak. However, as we got closer to the ending, many things started to happen. It got better and better, and the final episode hit me really hard. So hard that I actually cried a little. It was just¬†that¬†good. Excellent continuation, I really really wish for a third season now. The animation is nice, and better than the first season to be completely honest. The music though, is on a whole new level. If I were to conclude the sounds in this season of Saekano in two words, it would be: Absolutely beautiful.

I will recommend this anime. Definitely. Go. Watch. It. It became infinitely close to a 10 from me because of the last episode, but there’s just something lacking that made it remain as a 9. However, I would still love this anime.

One sentence conclusion: It’s hard to compete with a heroine, isn’t it?

Renai Boukun

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/32262/Renai_Boukun

Expected rating: 7/10

First impressions rating: 9/10

Mid-season rating: 9.5/10

End-season rating: 8.5/10

We now come to one of the surprises of the season for me: Renai Boukun. At the start of the season, it was genuine comedy gold. I had barrels of laughter in each episode, and this continued until the middle, where things started to slow down and Renai Boukun started to show its plot. I know what you are thinking: A comedy show has a plot? Yes, it does, and it was pretty damn interesting too. So why did its rating drop? Well, although the plot is nice and all, I didn’t enjoy it as much as the pure comedy it was. It just was not as entertaining to me, although it still was nice.

I would still recommend this anime, although some may not like it, and many probably did not enjoy it as much as I did, I still think that you should at least give it a try.

One sentence conclusion: Fun and energetic, just like love.

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/32901/Eromanga-sensei

Expected rating: 8/10

First impressions rating: 9.5/10

Mid-season rating: 9.5/10

End-season rating: 8.5/10

We have arrived at our destination: Eromanga-sensei! Expect to find lots of fun and excitement, as well as cuteness along with lewdness! Just make sure nobody is near you when you watch this, or you might receive looks that say “You are human trash”! Also take note to secure your privacy or the FBI might be on your door soon.

Jokes aside, this was seriously fun. There were so many hilarious moments in this anime, and I genuinely enjoyed the hell out of it. Everyone can call it trash, and even I would call it a trash anime, but this trash manages to brighten up my day every time without fail. With amazing art and animation quality, great songs as well as good voice acting, this anime does its job well and was popular for a reason.(no not the lewd reason) However, I feel slightly disappointed by the ending so I moved its rating down to 8 at the end(My exact thought was “It ended?!”). Here’s hoping for a season 2!

One sentence conclusion: My little sister cannot be this ero!(And my trashy anime cannot be this entertaining!)

Alice to Zouroku

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/34350/Alice_to_Zouroku

Expected rating: 7/10

First impressions rating: 6.5/10

Mid-season rating: 8.5/10

End-season rating: 9/10

This anime was one hell of a ride, but it was so worth it. From a shaky first episode into a much better second and third episode, and eventually into one of the best season endings I have seen, this anime has come a long way. It wasn’t particularly impressive with its plot, characters, or even art, but it does such a good job overall. The slice of life element was perfectly incorporated into the story and we have the most refreshing MC duo yet: A grumpy old grandpa who is not afraid to scold anyone doing anything wrong and a little girl who is completely new to the outside world. It’s so heartwarming every episode and the I always look forward to my weekly kawaii session with this anime.

A definite recommend from me, I know a lot of people might not and do not like this anime, but I know that at least for me, it gave me warmth and many good memories.

One sentence conclusion: Kagami yo kagami, watashi sekai o kaetai no ~ (Also featuring Zouroku scolding everything)

Shuumatsu Nani Shitemasu ka? Isogashii desu ka? Sukutte Moratte Ii desu ka?

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/33502/Shuumatsu_Nani_Shitemasu_ka_Isogashii_desu_ka_Sukutte_Moratte_Ii_desu_ka

Expected rating: 7.5/10

First impressions rating: 8/10

Mid-season rating: 8.5/10

End-season rating: 9/10

Ah… Suka Suka. You and your long name have managed to become one of the top anime of this season, for the your sheer, consistent quality, the tragedies that everyone called out but still got saddened by, your awesome soundtrack, as well as a plot that enchants people. Well done. Having just finished the ending as of time of writing, I can only say: good job. This anime deserves the 9 I give.

A worthy recommendation from me. Some people may not like it, but I know I enjoyed every moment and cried when it hit me.

One sentence conclusion:¬†Are you goin’ to Scarborough Fair?~

Clockwork Planet

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/32407/Clockwork_Planet

Expected rating: 9/10

First impressions rating: 8/10

Mid-season rating: 6/10

End-season rating: 5/10

I didn’t think things will turn out so bad. From high hopes into disappointments and eventually the drop, ¬†this really wasn’t supposed to happen. You were supposed to be good! You were supposed to be entertaining! Why is there an almost 2 difference in scores between the source and the anime itself?!

Rants aside, I cannot say I recommend this anime. It started a hype train and promptly crashed it into the mountain of shitty animation and boring plot, along with the viewers on it. There is definitely differing opinions on this, as I know some friends who enjoyed this, but I cannot say that I did.

One sentence conclusion: RyuZU? RyuZU?! Save me!

Sakurada Reset

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/34102/Sakurada_Reset

Expected rating: 8/10

First impressions rating: 7.5/10

Mid-season rating: 7/10

End-season rating: 7/10

Started this anime with caution, met with many obstacles, pushed through anyways, but in the end, I couldn’t take it anymore. It’s not a bad anime by any means, it just¬†bores¬†me. I can’t really explain it really well, but it’s most likely due to the way they tell the story and drag on and on about minor details that turns out to be, well, minor details. The characters do not stand out either and because of the combination of bad storytelling and characterisation I found it boring.

I cannot recommend this anime, but I won’t say its bad, so it could be good if you gave it a try.

One sentence conclusion: Ever wanted to know about a random pebble on the streets? Yea, me neither.

Sin: Nanatsu no Taizai

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/33834/Sin__Nanatsu_no_Taizai

Expected rating: 6/10

First impressions rating: 5/10

Mid-season rating: 5/10

End-season rating: 5/10

I dropped this really early on, and for a good reason. I watch anime for entertainment, not “entertainment”. There’s not much to say about this, since I already spoke multiple times about my reasons for dropping this.

I wouldn’t recommend it for the typical viewers, but if you are a hentai, go ahead and watch this.

One sentence conclusion: Enjoy yourselves perverts.

Zero kara Hajimeru Mahou no Sho

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/34176/Zero_kara_Hajimeru_Mahou_no_Sho

Expected rating: 7.5/10

First impressions rating: 7/10

Mid-season rating: 7/10

End-season rating: 6/10

It gave me good vibes, but I was wrong I guess. To me, this anime seemed too… typical. It didn’t really offer anything new or try to do so either. I did have fun watching it for the first few episodes and enjoyed it a little bit, but then the bad parts came and I realised that I probably shouldn’t continue watching this show as my entertainment was decreasing with each episode. Thus, I dropped it.

I wouldn’t recommend this personally, but as it stands, there are probably many that liked this show. Give it a try if you want to.

One sentence conclusion: This feels like a children’s show.

Did not watch but planning to sometime

Shingeki no Kyojin Season 2

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/25777/Shingeki_no_Kyojin_Season_2

Didn’t watch this one because I didn’t watch the season 1 yet. Didn’t watch the season 1 yet because I have other things to watch and do. However, I definitely want to watch this sometime. It is definitely not a bad anime by any means.

One sentence conclusion: Sie sind das essen und wie sind die jä-oh wait-Sasageyo Sasageyo!

Shingeki no Bahamut: Virgin Soul

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/30736/Shingeki_no_Bahamut__Virgin_Soul

Same reason as AOT, didn’t watch the first season yet. I have heard many good things about this anime though, and I expect myself to enjoy it when I actually watch it.

One sentence conclusion: Shingeki no Bahamut or Kyojin?

Tsuki ga Kirei

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/34822/Tsuki_ga_Kirei

I didn’t watch it because I thought it wouldn’t be good. Almost everyone proved me wrong though, and I now know that this is a sweet little anime about romance and the likes. Will definitely give it a try next time.

One sentence conclusion: Missed opportunities for not watching this.

Sakura Quest

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/34494/Sakura_Quest

I started this season basically being an almost amateur at anime. Therefore, I didn’t know of the greatness that is Shirobako, and now that I watched Shirobako, I want to watch Sakura Quest. It’s basically another Shirobako! I mean, the MC is literally just Myamori with different coloured hair! Although, it is said that Sakura Quest is different in its own way. I would follow this anime, but as it stands its probably better for me to wait until everything comes out and binge on it, since I already missed so much(12 episodes to be exact).

One sentence conclusion: Regrets of not having enough experience.

Continuing into next season

Boku no Hero Academia 2nd Season

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/33486/Boku_no_Hero_Academia_2nd_Season

So far so good, animation has gotten much better compared to first season, the arcs they are adapting is hyper good as well(being a manga reader, I know), and it will continue to be great as long as studio Bones keep up the good effort. Really looking forward to more. Also, the first ending is awesome, and I’m sad that it will go, but we are getting LiSA for second ending, so that’s a fair trade I suppose.

Definitely a recommend from me, worth every minute of watching.

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/34561/Re_Creators

Great anime so far, its an original, it has nice animations and art, it has great references, the plot and mysteries is great, the music is by the god Sawano Hiroyuki  himself, what else are you waiting for? I will continue to enjoy this series until it ends.

Definite recommendation from me, and I’m sure I’m not the only one. Give it a try, even if negative reviews put you off.

One sentence conclusion: I’m screaming something to you, whatever something to me~

Whelp, here’s an extra awards section. Awards given out during mid-season review won’t be repeated here, so here are the unique awards:

Sawano Hiroyuki, destroyer of worlds, maker of most epic anime OSTs.

Best character

Winner/First place:

[Saenai Heroine no Sodatekata ‚ô≠/ Saekano‚ô≠]

Wait wait wait. Before you bash me to death, I do not operate on a best girl basis. However, Megumi does deserve this position this season simply due to what happened. (also for that insane quality insert song hehe)

Runner up:

Chtholly Nota Seniorious

[Shuumatsu Nani Shitemasu ka? Isogashii desu ka? Sukutte Moratte Ii desu ka?/Suka Suka]

My god, this girl. Amazing characterisation. Can’t really talk too much without revealing the plot and spoiling so just know she is great.

Second runner up:

Zouroku Kashimura

[Alice to Zouroku]

This man is one of the most refreshing main character I have ever seen. I want my own grumpy Japanese grandpa now.
