Mid season review: Summer 2017

Ah… My second anime season yet, and already halfway through. Before I started the season, I honestly did not have too much expectations, and even thought the Fall season was going to be leaps better already. However, there were still many surprises and good things that actually came out this season, despite it being relatively tame. Now then, on to the summer season mid season review!

Continuing to watch

Boku no Hero Academia S2

MAL link : https://myanimelist.net/anime/33486/Boku_no_Hero_Academia_2nd_Season

Expected rating: 9/10
First impressions rating: 9/10
Mid-season rating: 9/10

The beast show from last season continues into this season, and does not disappoint. Stepping into one of the best arcs of the series, there is much hype as well as many exciting moments to be had. Definitely still keeping and growing its popularity and well deserving of its solid 9 rating. Not to mention, the new opening song is not bad either and the ending song, although leaving behind the almost godly level first ending, moved onto a delightful one by LiSA. The art continues to impress and with another even better arc incoming, we can expect many great things.

If you don’t at least give this anime a try, I am disappointed in you. Not. People can have their own opinions if they want to. That doesn’t stop me from hating you though

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/34662/Fate_Apocrypha

Expected rating: 7/10
First impressions rating: 9/10
Mid-season rating: 8/10

So far, this series have not disappointed me. The action scenes are great and well animated, the plot is thick and very suspenseful, and the characters very likeable. Every single person has their own driving force, instead of impractical things such as “we have to save the world“. Although it started off strong, it has started to slow down a bit with the recent episodes, and although that’s not bad, it can seem a bit draggy. Therefore, the rating for me has fallen a bit, but it still continues to be very good. It still has high potential to be better.

As my entry anime to the Fate series, I am pretty happy. Being able to understand without having to know the entire gigantic Fate universe gives this anime a huge plus and if you are looking for a new Fate show without having to decide about watching in “some chronological/release order” thingy that every big franchise suffers from, give this a try.

Youkai Apartment no Yuuga na Nichijou

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/35220/Youkai_Apartment_no_Yuuga_na_Nichijou

Expected rating: 6/10
First impressions rating: 7/10
Mid-season rating: 7/10

This anime continues to be a solid 7 as the plot advances. There’s not too many outstanding things to note from this, but it is pretty good and I feel pretty entertained by watching it. However, I won’t hesitate to drop it if it ever turns sour, but with a recent announcement for a 2 cour, it seems unlikely that the production will start slacking off now. It may not be the best thing from this season, but it definitely is not the worst. Give this anime a try if you want to.

Koi to Uso

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/34934/Koi_to_Uso

Expected rating: 7/10
First impressions rating: 7/10
Mid-season rating: 8/10

Honestly, I am glad that I picked this anime up. It was such a surprise in the happy sense. I had no idea what to expect other than some romance starting out, but now, I am just looking forward to each new episode. The art style might put off some people, but since I am not bothered by these type of things, I can state that the art and animation in this is very nice. Not only that, the music. Oh god the music. The literally hypnotising opening song combined with an equally nice ending song just made this anime all the better, and the background songs/music is not letting up either, helping to build up the mood. It started off serious but as the plot moved along there were quite a few comedic gold moments and in recent episodes I have been laughing out loud for quite a bit. The plot too, is genuinely nice and the characters are pretty well developed, with the exception of a few. We should be able to expect more from this anime.

If you don’t mind the eyes(which my friend does, stone him to death), try this anime out. Be sure not to skip the opening song.

Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni.

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/35203/Isekai_wa_Smartphone_to_Tomo_ni

Expected rating: 6/10
First impressions rating: 7/10
Mid-season rating: 7/10

A literal walking stereotype of an anime that does not mind what others think of it. That’s Isekai Smartphone, and that’s what I fell in love with. Simple plots with many tropes abound and quite literally a harem in every sense, along with the character being a literal jesus(you can step down now Jesus-kun) makes it seem as if it should be a boring show. However, it manages to be quite the opposite and entertains me every episode with light-hearted humour. I didn’t expect much out of this, but I got many in return. Many people may not like this anime, but I think it is fine as it is. Characters may feel stereotypical as well, but it really isn’t as every character still manages to feel interesting and you will find yourself liking them quite a bit.

New Game!!/New Game! S2

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/34914/New_Game

Expected rating: 8/10
First impressions rating: 8/10
Mid-season rating: 9/10

It’s the second season of New Game! We get our old cast of adorable characters, along with new plot developments! The opening and ending songs are awesome! The animations are still great! The plot is actually pretty good now! The kawaii-o-meter is rising through the roof! Watch it now!!

I’m just genuinely happy because of this show.

Youkoso Jitsuryoku Shijou Shugi no Kyoushitsu e

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/35507/Youkoso_Jitsuryoku_Shijou_Shugi_no_Kyoushitsu_e_TV

Expected rating: 7/10
First impressions rating: 8/10
Mid-season rating: 9/10

What do you get when you grab Onii-sama from Mahouka and drop him into the world of Baka to Test while making it much more realistic and brutal? You get an awesome show, that’s what. This show manages to stick out from the crowd of good shows this season, and for a good reason. A male lead that is op but does not give a f*ck. Female leads that are very interesting. A plot that smells of mystery and suspense. Interesting developments in the plot that just seems to make you want to watch it more and more. That opening song, and those quotes at the end and start of every episode. And all of these combine to make Youkoso Jitsuryoku a very interesting anime that has very high potential.

Oh, the art is really nice too. Give this anime a try.

Made in Abyss

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/34599/Made_in_Abyss

Expected rating: 6/10
First impressions rating: 9/10
Mid-season rating: 9/10

The black horse of this season, it exploded in popularity ever since it started airing. On the outside, it seems like a completely normal adventure type anime for kids, but it is quite the opposite. With a gripping plot that is as deep as the abyss itself(Yea I’ll go KMS sorry) as well as outstanding characters, this show captured the hearts of the viewers with the first episode alone. Not to mention the crazy good music that appeared in the first episode along with a very good opening song, combined with some awesomely animated scenes and backgrounds, make this anime outstanding and truly the black horse of this season. Definitely give this a try.

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/34933/Kakegurui

Expected rating: 9/10
First impressions rating: 9/10
Mid-season rating: 9/10

I read the manga, I loved it. I watched the anime, I loved it. This series is amazing in more ways than just one, and since I already said enough good things, let’s just move onto the next show.

Oh, it seems to have become No.1 in popularity this season too. Give it a try. Or I’ll slay you

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/34561/Re_Creators

Expected rating: 9/10
First impressions rating: 9/10
Mid-season rating: 9/10

Well, speaking of good shows continued from last season, Re:Creators is definitely another one. This show never ceases to amaze, and in this season, it has actually sped up even further in terms of plot and action. Lord Sawano Hiroyuki continues with his streak of awesome songs, and the new characters are amazing, and with Kazuma’s VA joining in, this is one hell of a show right now. I can’t wait for the weekly episodes.

It’s definitely worth a try if you haven’t watched it yet.

Welcome to the losers’ lobby! This season, there were much less disappointments than compared to the last, and although it might be simply due to me lowering my expectations, it is still a great thing!

Hajimete no Gal

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/34403/Hajimete_no_Gal

Expected rating: 6/10

Mid-season rating: 6/10

Reasons for dropping here.

Read the manga instead of watching this anime.

Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu

Expected rating: 7/10
First impressions rating: 7/10

There’s nothing wrong with liking this anime however, so feel free to give it a try.

This season’s music selection is pretty freaking awesome, no joke. From opening to ending songs, and even the general background soundtracks, the music and songs we have heard are preeeeetty good. And I’m not sure if it’s the trend recently, but it seems as if a lot of songs this season are making use of claps or clap alongs to make the music catchier. It sure works, and I find myself brainwashed, but at the same time I can’t help but wonder.

Whelp, anyways, onto the musics awards!

P.S Expanded number of awards for some categories due to how many good ones there are, causing me being unable to pick.

Best opening song

Special mentions: (Not quite the best yet, but very nice nonetheless)

Boku no Hero Academia S2 [“Sora ni Utaeba (空に歌えば)” by amazarashi]
Fate/Apocrypha [“Eiyuu Unmei no Uta (英雄 運命の詩)” by EGOIST]
Youkoso Jitsuryoku Shijou Shugi no Kyoushitsu e [“Caste Room (カーストルーム)” by ZAQ]
Youkai Apartment no Yuuga na Nichijou [“Good Night Mare” by Rozareena (ロザリーナ)]
Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu [“Hikari Tatsu Ame (ヒカリ断ツ雨)” by Soma Saito]

5th place:

“Deal with the devil” by Tia

Stunning jazz music combined with awesome animations makes for a great opening.

4th place:

“Deep in Abyss” by Riko (CV:Miyu Tomita) and Regu (CV: Mariya Ise)
[Made in Abyss]

Gorgeous looking animations accompanying a song that sends goosebumps down my spine with its awesome high pitches and duet.

Can’t really make out the romaji for this one but the part with the violin accompaniment is golden.

3rd place:

“STEP by STEP UP↑↑↑↑” by fourfolium [Aoba Suzukaze (Yuuki Takada), Hifumi Takimoto (Megumi Yamaguchi), Hajime Shinoda (Megumi Toda), Yun Iijima (Ayumi Takeo)]
[New Game!!/New Game! S2]

Amazing animations to start off, followed off my kawaii moe moe singing which makes me excited for each new episode, and genuinely puts a smile on my face every time it starts. The epitome of happy songs along with season 1’s opening.

Mankai STEP BY STEP de susume!
STEP BY STEP, tobidase!

2nd place:

“sh0ut” by SawanoHiroyuki[nZk]:Tielle & Gemie

Just when I thought last season’s “Gravity Wall” can’t be topped in terms of opening music quality, Sawano Hiroyuki continues his streak with the second opening, “sh0ut”. This song is very catchy while at the same time stunning in terms of the impact of the song. Amazingly done, along with good animation to back it up. Well deserved 2nd placing.

Time has come to listen to the crying of their puppet souls~

And finally, we have come to the first place….

1st place:

“Kanashii Ureshii (かなしいうれしい)” by Frederic (フレデリック)
[Koi to Uso]

Oh man, when I heard this song, my world has changed. From then on, I have been absolutely addicted to this beast of a song. It’s brainwashingly nice, and you will crave for it more and more the more you hear it. Hearing it before the start of every episode, I can’t stop myself from singing and clapping along. It’s amazing.

Kanashii, Kanashii, Kanashii~
Ureshii, Ureshii, Ureshii~

Best ending song

Special mentions: (Not quite the best yet, but very nice nonetheless)

Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni. [“Junjou Emotional (純情エモーショナル)” by various VAs]
Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu [“Hyakka Ryouran (百火撩乱)” by Kalafina]
Hajimete no Gal [“GAL-tic Love (GAL的LOVE(ギャルチックラブ))” by Erabareshi (エラバレシ)]
Re:Creators [“Rubikon (ルビコン)” by Sangatsu no Phantasia]
Made in Abyss [“Tabi no Hidarite, Saihate no Migite (旅の左手、最果ての右手)” by Riko (Miyu Tomita) and Nanachi (Shiori Izawa)]

5th place:

“Désir” by GARNiDELiA

Very nice and soothing ending overall with a bit of tension, highlighting the type of anime that Fate/Apocryoha is.

4th place:

“Datte Atashi no Hero. (だってアタシのヒーロー。)” by LiSA
[Boku no Hero Academia S2]

Although the awesome ending from last season is gone, we are greeted with a new ending by LiSA, and she doesn’t fail to disappoint. It’s a very energetic ending and combined with the animations it makes people look forward to more Boku no Hero.

3rd place:

“Can’t you say” by Roys
[Koi to Uso]

This is a very catchy ending song. It also happens to be extremely soothing and I don’t mind hearing it every time the episode ends. Nicely done.

2nd place:

“LAYon-theLINE” by D-selections

This ending, for some reason, reminds me of Flyers. Extremely catchy and coupled with weirdly erotic ending animations, I find myself unable to skip this.

And finally, we have come to the first place….

1st place:

“JUMPin’ JUMP UP!!!!” by fourfolium [Aoba Suzukaze (Yuuki Takada), Hifumi Takimoto (Megumi Yamaguchi), Hajime Shinoda (Megumi Toda), Yun Iijima (Ayumi Takeo)]
[New Game!!/New Game! S2]

This song, although weirdly similar to the opening, utterly melting my heart when coupled with the animations. It is so sweet, and at the same time so catchy. Definitely best ending song this season.

Saa sukippu.bai.suteppu and dai janpu!
Susume! Susume! Mae ni!

Ending words

This season was great. It had its fair share of bad anime, but at the same time it brought us many new ones that were just as great. Here’s to hoping the second half is just as nice!

Did your favourite anime make it onto this list? Perhaps you would have given out the awards differently? I won’t mind hearing your opinions~

EDIT: Realised the formatting issues on the music awards section. It is fixed now. Sorry for the eye cancer.

I would appreciate any feedback and discussion!
