End season review: Summer 2017

Took me awhile to find good enough key visuals to use this time, and I definitely did a more sloppy job editing too because I had to rush it. Still, I got it done I guess. When I have more time, I’ll definitely give you one around the quality of the spring 2017 review picture. Either way, please credit me if you want to use this picture anywhere else, since I still painstakingly edited it. All pictures are sourced from key visuals, as always.

Summer is over! Along with it, the Summer 2017 season. It was a great season that started off with any people predicting a less than good season and ended with many in awe at some of the anime that came out. I honestly didn’t expect much from this season and the many pleasant surprises I got from what I selected shocked me. Autumn is starting right about now, along with Autumn 2017, which contains many anticipated sequels as well as new series. I hope I will be able to enjoy the next season as well, but with how busy I’ll be, I probably won’t be able to.

Anyways, onto the actual reviews!

Note: shows that are continuing onto their next seasons have their reviews done at Ep 12, when they usually take a 1 week break before continuing.

Mid-season rating: 9/10
End-season rating: 9/10

Re:Creator’s was great this season. Building up a very reasonable climax together with a resolution for everyone, this was perhaps one of the best closings I’ve seen for anime. I feel very satisfied having watched this anime and I feel as if the story has indeed ended on a nice note. Perhaps its had its ups and downs, perhaps it was boring at parts, especially with some heavy exposition, but that doesn’t change the fact that it was pretty much consistently great quality throughout. It was a nice watch that was definitely worth giving a shot, with outstanding visuals, music as well as an above average plot, on top of being an anime original.

I would definitely recommend this as a watch for everyone, and I kind of feel sad now that it’s gone.

One sentence conclusion: An unique story about creators, creations, and ideals.

What’s stuck in my head:
I’m screaming something to you, whatever something to me~
Time has come to listen to the crying of their puppet souls~
“A lie within a lie, turns itself inside-out.”

Koi to Uso

Expected rating: 7/10
First impressions rating: 7/10
Mid-season rating: 8/10
End-season rating: 8/10

It ended! It actually ended! Although it was a non-conclusive ending as to be expected from just 12 episodes, I think the anime did its job of entertaining people well. With a mix-up of feelings from episode 1 onwards, we got 12 episodes of drama and romance. Although the ending leaves viewers hanging, I thoroughly enjoyed the 12 episodes that I watched. Not to mention that there were several moments of pure comedy gold that just had me laughing out loud. The animations were pretty good, coupled with an impressive soundtrack, and brainwashing opening song along with a great ending song, this anime was only lacking in the sense that it can get tiring to see the same problems being presented over and over. Hopefully, if there is ever a season 2, we can get a conclusion to the story.

I would recommend this to anyone looking for romance from this season.

One sentence conclusion: Many loves surrounded by much lies.

What’s stuck in my head:
“Kanashii, Kanashii, Kanashii~ Ureshii, Ureshii, Ureshii~”
“Which type of soap do I use?”
The many great reaction faces.

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/34933/Kakegurui

Expected rating: 9/10
First impressions rating: 9/10
Mid-season rating: 9/10
End-season rating: 9/10

Annnd with a less than climatic ending, Kakegurui has ended. It was a hell of a ride, with many shocking moments as well as many great mind blowing reveals. It felt really nice to see what I read in the manga come to life in person, and I definitely enjoyed it. The animations were great, the soundtrack is amazing, the voice acting is top-notch, the plot was adapted well from the source material and even the anime original ending was not bad and opens the opportunity for a second season. Hopefully we get one.

I would definitely recommend this anime to everybody.

One sentence conclusion: Mind games and psychos.

What’s stuck in my head:
Opening and ending songs.
That “Huh?” from Manyuda.
The many faces that are now animated and enhanced.

Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni.

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/35203/Isekai_wa_Smartphone_to_Tomo_ni

Expected rating: 6/10
First impressions rating: 7/10
Mid-season rating: 7/10
End-season rating: 7/10

Isekai Smartphone was typical. It had every stereotype of isekais fantasies ever, and yet it did not shy away from itself. Instead, it embraced it’s stereotypes and chose to play on them instead of trying to break the mold. You can say it is an almost perfect cookie that came out of the cookie cutter. However, instead of being boring because of how typical it is, somehow in one way or another it found a way to entertain. There were many good comedic moments in this anime, along with the most overpowered skill known to men–Slip. Although the animation and art were not great, it was watchable and coupled with how entertaining it was I find myself able to enjoy it quite a bit. What’s more, the protagonist is literally what Kazuma would have been if he had not done what he did, and I think he would pretty much define what “Jesus-kun” would mean…until the death march protagonist comes along next year I suppose.
Anyways, it was definitely enjoyable and although I wouldn’t recommend it to everyone because you need to embrace the faults of the anime to enjoy it, it was still great fun and the ending did not disappoint either. I would ask my closer friends to watch this.

One sentence conclusion: Jesus-kun has a harem after reincarnating…but manages to entertain me to no end despite the absolute shit sounding premise.

What’s stuck in my head:
Actual harem that actually works out!!
Slip vs the world.
Jesus-kun walking under the water instead of over.

New Game!!/New Game! S2

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/34914/New_Game

Expected rating: 8/10
First impressions rating: 8/10
Mid-season rating: 9/10
End-season rating: 10/10

New Game!! was amazing this season. I binged the first season sometime before the summer season started because my friend recommended me it, but I was not expecting the sequel to come out right now in the summer season. As a result, I was able to watch season 2 with season 1 still fresh in my mind. This season, the pace of the story accelerated, the plot thickened, and new characters were introduced that brought another new dimension to the story. What’s more, the animations and art got even better than last season and the music was even more amazing than last season.
I’ll be honest and admit that this season had me tearing up quite a bit. It was just so beautifully executed and along with the many improvements, I have enjoyed the anime much, much more. Therefore, I increased my personal rating of it to 10.

I would definitely recommend everyone to give this anime a try and if you haven’t watch the first season yet, well, what are you waiting for? Go do it now!

One sentence conclusion: SOL and cuteness mashed together, forming the most amazing concoction that will soothe you over any worries.

What’s stuck in my head:
Opening and ending songs. Absolutely fantastic.
The 2-3 extremely memorable moments from this season.
Aoba’s growth(no not that kind of growth).
The background soundtrack. Whoever did it deserves a raise.

Youkoso Jitsuryoku Shijou Shugi no Kyoushitsu e

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/35507/Youkoso_Jitsuryoku_Shijou_Shugi_no_Kyoushitsu_e_TV

Expected rating: 7/10
First impressions rating: 8/10
Mid-season rating: 9/10
End-season rating: 9/10

Classroom of the Elite was a strange addition to the summer roster. It was your typical light novel adaptation that appears every season, and at the same time it seemed to have a plot that was similar to Baka to Test‘s, making it seem like something that would be very typical and generally not good. As a result, I also did not expect too much out of this. The only lead I have going into this was my friend saying that the source was really good.
Oh how shocked I was by this anime. Beautiful art and animations, an extremely thick plot that makes you keep wanting for more, wonderfully built up suspense, characters that seem to fit into certain stereotypes but smashes them when they turn around, and an absolutely fabulous MC that just shocks me more and more. I find myself completely absorbed into the story and by the last episode where lots of things were revealed, I find myself screaming internally for a season 2.
Hopefully this anime gets one, but even if it doesn’t, at this point the anime has convinced me enough with its “Read the source” ending that I will do just that.

I will definitely recommend everyone to give it a try, don’t be fooled by the appearance of this anime.

One sentence conclusion: One big tournament arc in school amplified by the many schemes and plans everyone has behind each other’s back.

What’s stuck in my head:
The MC’s absolute zero amounts of f*ck given throughout the show.
The ending and what the MC says, it really sends a chill down my spine.
The mind-blowing amounts of behind-the-scenes action that all lead to the result.

Made in Abyss

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/34599/Made_in_Abyss

Expected rating: 6/10
First impressions rating: 9/10
Mid-season rating: 9/10
End-season rating: 10/10

Simply beautiful. That’s what this show is, that’s what I saw throughout the entire season with Made in Abyss. Starting with a mindblowing first episode that had everyone’s mouth in an “O” shape, following up by undauntedly showing just how dark adventures can get with its 10th episode, and finally ending with one of the best ending episodes I have seen, I cannot believe that this anime has just ended. If possible, I really did not want this anime to end. It was an amazing ride from the start to the end, and I cannot express how happy I am to have picked this anime up. If a season 2 doesn’t get confirmed anytime soon, I will definitely go read the source.
The art and animations were astoundingly beautiful. The soundtrack gives me eargasms. The opening and ending songs are amazing. The voice acting was great. The plot is overpoweringly deep compared to what it appears to be. Everything in this anime screams “perfect”, and it definitely deserved the attention it got in this season.

A definite recommend from me, do not be fooled by the appearance of a children’s adventure show, this is nothing like what you will imagine when you first take a look.

One sentence conclusion: Do not judge a book by its cover, and do not judge an anime by its appearance.

What’s stuck in my head:
The three main characters(They all deserve attention).
The things they went through.
The soundtrack. Kevin Penkin is a god in my eyes now.

Boku no Hero Academia S2

MAL link : https://myanimelist.net/anime/33486/Boku_no_Hero_Academia_2nd_Season

Expected rating: 9/10
First impressions rating: 9/10
Mid-season rating: 9/10
End-season rating: 9/10

Boku no Hero academia season 2 has ended. What can I say? It was a great season yet again, and this series never ceases to amaze me. I already know what will come for season 3 since I’ve read the manga, yet I can’t help but hype for it. This series just has its unique charms that doesn’t need to be explained.

Watch this as long as you don’t somehow hate shounen for no reason.

One sentence conclusion: Great sequel, an upgrade of season 1, and just builds upon the greatness of BnHa.

Whats stuck in my head:
Sora ni Utaeba~
The first ending song of this season.
Every single thing really, this series is awesome.

Continuing into the next season

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/34662/Fate_Apocrypha

Expected rating: 7/10
First impressions rating: 9/10
Mid-season rating: 8/10
End-season rating: 8/10

Fate/Apocrypha was a strong entry of anime from this season. With good source material(Fate series) as well as a strong line-up of staff coupled with interesting plot, you would expect the anime to be very good. And at first, it really was pretty good. However, it soon slowed down with less than interesting story telling narratives as well as a very questionable choice of MC. Therefore, it still leaves much to be desired, although it was still plenty good. I enjoyed this season, and I will of course look forward to continuing it next season. The art and animations was less good when compared to the ufotable produced Fate/Zero and Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works, but it still remains impressive. The sound effects are questionable at times but the background music and opening/ending songs more than make up for it. The voice acting was not too bad either and the plot, although not as good as people imagined it to be, was still great and this anime overall remains a good watch.

Would definitely recommend this to people who are looking for a solid anime to watch from this season.

One sentence conclusion: The latest entry of anime for the Fate series, but makes many wanting improvements.

What’s stuck in my head:
The ending song.
The extremely epic background music.
Saber of Red/Mordred
Berserker of Black/Frankenstein
Ultimate traplord Rider of Black/Astolfo

Youkai Apartment no Yuuga na Nichijou

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/35220/Youkai_Apartment_no_Yuuga_na_Nichijou

Expected rating: 6/10
First impressions rating: 7/10
Mid-season rating: 7/10
End-season rating: 7/10

Youkai Apartment was an ok watch from this season. Alright animations and art, fine voice acting, and a plot that is not really exciting but not boring at the same time, it became sort of a SOL filler type of show where I watch it every week to relax myself after an intense day. It’s definitely not very good, but at the same time it manages to be entertaining enough such that I wouldn’t drop it. Thus, it is pretty much a solid 7 for me and I’m hoping that it will stay more or less the same next season, although it would be better if they managed to improve somehow.

I wouldn’t really recommend this show to anyone, but at the same time, I wouldn’t stop anyone trying to watch this show. Give it a try if you feel like you would like it.

One sentence conclusion: Life lessons with monsters and ghosts.

What’s stuck in my head:
Nothing really, this show doesn’t have memorable moments yet.

Hajimete no Gal

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/34403/Hajimete_no_Gal

Expected rating: 6/10
First impressions rating: 6/10
Mid-season rating: 6/10
End-season rating: ?/10(Dropped mid-season)

Reasons for dropping here.

Read the manga instead of watching this anime.

One sentence conclusion: Fanservice gone wrong…

What’s stuck in my head:
Don’t overuse fanservice…

Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/33018/Katsugeki_Touken_Ranbu

Expected rating: 7/10
First impressions rating: 7/10
Mid-season rating: 6/10
End-season rating: ?/10(Dropped mid-season)

Reason for dropping here.

There’s nothing wrong with liking this anime however, so feel free to give it a try.

One sentence conclusion: If we don’t care about the characters or the plot, all that is left is an art piece with no meaning.

What’s stuck in my head:
Beautiful animations.

Missed out on

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/34280/Gamers

This anime definitely became a big hit this season, and seeing how much positive reviews there are, I will try it out sometime when I get the time.

Sakura Quest

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/34494/Sakura_Quest

It’s Shirobako version 2! How can I not watch it?!

Tsurezure Children

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/34902/Tsurezure_Children

I thought this was going to be another typical romcom, but judging from the reception of the anime, it seems as if it could be really good. Will give it a try next time.

Ending awards

Well, given the amount of goodness I received from this season, we definitely have some awards to give out. Especially ones I couldn’t give during the mid-season review. Let’s go!

Best insert song:

“Hanezeve Caradhina (ft.Takeshi Saito)” by Kevin Penkin
[Made in Abyss]

So good. I have been playing this on repeat for quite a while ever since I saw the last episode and I don’t think I can stop myself. When this song played, I feel myself sinking deeper and deeper into this series, I found myself entranced.

Best character:

[Made in Abyss]

The things she went through… her character depth… everything about her is great. There is even a rumour going around that her appearance in the manga saved it from getting cancelled. Her existence alone caused the popularity of Made in Abyss to soar and I would definitely agree now that I’ve seen her in action. Definitely best character from this season.

Best ending:

Made in Abyss

Once again, it’s Made in Abyss. This anime has just managed to do everything right this season, and with an ending like that, I can’t help but adore it.

Ending words

Well, now that everything is said and done, this End season review is now over. I’m looking forward to the Fall season, and you can read the pre-season preview here. As always, hopefully you people have enjoyed this season.

I’ll be dead now.

-A dead Plyasm
