End season review: Fall 2017 (Part 1)

NOTE: Before this post actually begins, I would like to say that this is of course a VERY, VERY long overdue post. The fact of the matter is, I was waiting on Fate/Apocrypha.

imouto ending screencap2
I believe this endcard is a very good image for celebrating the end of a season. [Anime: Imouto sae Ireba Ii.]

The Fall season 2017 has ended. It was not exactly the greatest season, and it does has its fair share of bad shows and good shows. Regardless, I enjoyed this season, and I am really looking forward to the Winter 2018 season.

Because I did not do a mid-season review for this season due to busyness, this End season review will be a little more long-winded than usual as I do more thorough reviews of each individual show. Furthermore, to ensure that this post does not drag on for way too long, I will be splitting the awards/top lists to a part 2, and this part 1 will only focus on the reviews themselves.

With that said, let’s begin the reviews!

Shokugeki no Soma: San no Sara

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/35788/Shokugeki_no_Souma__San_no_Sara

Expected rating: 9/10
First impressions rating: 9/10
End season rating: 9/10

Amazing end to the season, but just the starting of the awesomeness that will be the 2nd cour of S3, coming next spring. I already can’t wait!

To comment on the anime’s performance itself for this season, it was great, it hit all of my expectations and exceeded it. Ever since season 2, I had faithfully followed the manga and to see all the scenes I’ve previously read come to live was just lovely, and J.C. Staff did a fantastic job with the adaptation. I am very pleased with this and even if I already knew all the plot, the excitement and the hype the anime brings me is still real.
One thing that I must definitely say is how delicious the food in Shokugeki continue to look. I mean, I usually watch anime after my dinner, so usually I would be full with good food, but if it was Shokugeki day and I watch it, I get hungry again staring at the food. It’s magical what this anime does to one’s stomach and appetite and if I can, I will recommend all of you potential watchers to watch Shokugeki before/during a meal to make your meal much more enjoyable.

A definite recommendation from me, for anyone that enjoys anime in the teeniest bit, you will like this show. I mean, the only other shows that comes close in terms of both hype and food quality is Gordon Ramsay’s cooking shows, and that is fuelled on by his endless stream of profanities and burns.

One sentence conclusion: High quality food porn returns with more epic music!

What’s stuck in my head:
“Oagariyo!(Dig in!)”
*Insert foodgasm sounds here*
“Osomatsu!(It wasn’t much!)”
The ending part of the opening song… I can’t stop jamming to it.

Juuni Taisen

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/35076/Juuni_Taisen

Expected rating: 7/10
First impressions rating: 8/10
End season rating: 6/10

Pretty confusing end to the season right there. What started out as one of the most hyped shows for Fall 2017 ended up being pretty mediocre in the end.

Yup, the show was mediocre throughout the entire season. There really isn’t too much to comment about it, except that the show is fine to watch, but not exactly a great show. It is pretty much an action shounen that is a passable watch. As far as the ending and plot goes however, I’m not really satisfied.

A flimsy recommendation from me to any fans of shounen shows.

One sentence conclusion: Failed expectations but still an OK watch.

What’s stuck in my head:
The “rrrrrapture” from the opening song. I can’t do it!!
The ending song. Sawano Hiroyuki always comes through with his amazing music.

Houseki no Kuni

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/35557/Houseki_no_Kuni_TV

Expected rating: 5/10
Wow, we’ve come a long way from this rating.
First impressions rating: 6/10
End season rating: 10/10

This….is this even fair? To be a 3DCGI anime with such beautiful visuals, delightful soundtrack and music, and even a really engaging plot to boot. It’s as if this anime has got everything going for it. When I started it this season, I expected low levels of trashy 3DCGI like how the berserk anime was, but what I got shined with such brilliance I feel blinded. The characters, although they are just gems, feel even more alive than most characters from other anime. And on the other hand, although it feels as if it would just be a battle shounen type of anime, it was more seinen in the end and drama heavy, and the story turned out to be very interesting and deep. I am very pleasantly surprised at how good this season was, and I’m definitely looking forward to a season 2.

I would recommend this to nearly everyone due to how accessible the anime is in terms of genre as well as its plot.

One sentence conclusion: Everything done right as a 3DCGI anime series.

What’s stuck in my head:
Opening and ending songs, so good! Especially the orchestrated opening song at the final episode, it was simply epic and the feelings contained inside….
The beautifulness of this animation…my eyes have seen heaven itself.
Cliffhangers?!Why do you do this to me?! Now I gotta wait for season 2…

Imouto sae Ireba Ii.

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/35413/Imouto_sae_Ireba_Ii

Expected rating: 6/10
Again, we’ve come a long way from this rating.
First impressions rating: 8/10
End season rating: 10/10

I picked up this show expecting an Eromanga-sensei. What I got however, was so much, so much more. It has been an absolutely fantastic season so far, and watching this whole series is like walking down the path of life really: there are moments where it is absolutely hilarious, others frustrating and makes you feel for the characters, and sometimes obstacles appear that need to be overcome, and even more so, there are moments where you just want to cry. The anime might be over the top and ridiculous at times, but it has certainly felt more human than most other shows I’ve watched so far. The many nods it gives to authors throughout, the fun facts(including one about how to make a bowtie out of panties), the fanservice moments but at the same time the life lessons spread throughout the show, all just made me love and enjoy this show so much. And of course, let’s not forget to mention the very quality references the series had to other series, as well as the absolutely amazing opening and ending songs. The ending song especially, is such a good song and yet an amazingly good fit for the anime. When all is said and done, our ears are treated to a feast of beautiful vocals along with a track that is relaxing, soothing and yet brings out sadness at the same time. It’s this bittersweet feeling that was spread throughout the show that attracted me, and made me stay. And the life of an author is very accurately portrayed here, although exaggerated at times. And before I continue this now meaningless ramble, I really love how the many board games they have played throughout are mostly real and can be bought.
Last but not least, it is very clear that the cast of the anime themselves have heavily enjoyed doing the show, if you bothered checking the offical twitter.

I would definitely recommend this anime to almost everyone, just don’t get put off by the show’s first 2 minutes of the first episode as well as the ridiculousness sometimes and you will greatly enjoy this show. And if you are a writer in some form, including all you people writing blogs on wordpress, this show is definitely one you should at least watch to the end.

One sentence conclusion: This show is a perfect reflection of an author’s life in so many ways…

What’s stuck in my head:
Donna Hoshizora yori mo, Donna Omoide yori mo~

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/34542/Inuyashiki

Expected rating: 8/10
First impressions rating: 9/10
End season rating: 9/10
It is a 9/10 but infinitely close to a 10 for me.

Inuyashiki is the hero we need, but the hero we don’t deserve. This was a great anime, and the impact from everything is just too much. I can proudly say that I cried. Being a crybaby is not a bad thing sometimes you know…?

Watch this if you have a heart.

One sentence conclusion:……you know how you looked up to heroes when you were a child…?

What’s stuck in my head:
That ending song. That ending song…and the ending……

Himouto! Umaru-chan R

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/35376/Himouto_Umaru-chan_R

Expected rating: 8/10
First impressions rating: 8/10
End season rating: 8/10

Aww, would have been fine for this show to be present every week of my life really. It’s such a relatable show to the end and through the layers of fun it has it does have some substance inside. Well, it’s not too much, but Himouto remained a fun watch till the end. Well, this time however, it seems like the ending song far outshined the show itself. I mean, how can you NOT dance to this song…?

Would recommend to anyone who watched the first season and liked it.

One sentence conclusion: Himouto is back to bring joy to your days!

What’s stuck in my head:
Pura pura, pura pura, pura pura pura~
This video that I just stumbled upon
EDIT: This video is even more complete! I would freak out if it was me.

Just Because!

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/35639/Just_Because

Expected rating: 7/10
First impressions rating: 8/10
End season rating: 9/10

What can I say? Tsuki ga Kirei set the foundation for romance anime you can simply enjoy, and Just Because! is one that is very similar to that. However, they both managed to prove one thing: You don’t need amazing animations in order to make a good anime. Because after all, an anime needs a soul, and Just Because! has plenty of that. Throughout the season, it has been plagued by production issues but in the end it ended successfully and I am thankful for that, since I have been rooting for its completion as well as the ships I have my eyes set on. And frankly, this anime reminded me alot of my own high school experiences, so that’s an extra plus from me.
In conclusion, this anime is good at anything that isn’t it’s animation. However, it definitely seems like most of the budget and efforts are put into the movements and facial expressions, as they are usually much more lively than everything.

I would recommend this anime to anyone looking for romance.

One sentence conclusion: Why is this anime good? Just Because!

What’s stuck in my head:
The opening and ending songs. Gorgeous.

Blend S

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/34618/Blend_S

Expected rating: 7/10
First impressions rating: 8/10
End season rating: 9/10

It’s over…! It’s actually over…! I cannot believe it. Ending on a good note, Blend S has brought to me 12 fun-filled nights. It has a simple premise that is very interesting indeed, and it did its job well as a comedy SOL. I am one very satisfied customer of Cafe Stille. Well, to go deeper into the series, the opening song as well as the opening animations are basically touches of god that bring me endless joy while the voice acting is really well done. A-1 pictures did not disappoint us with the art and animations either and it was overall very smooth and nice to look at. The only thing I can think of to complain about is the blatant lack thereof of a good soundtrack at times, but I guess it doesn’t really matter too much as long as it remains enjoyable. Well, once more, Bon Appétit!

I would recommend Blend S to anyone looking for a comedy SOL.

One sentence conclusion: Cafe Stille, happy to serve you 12 episodes of joy!

What’s stuck in my head:
Smile, Sweet, Sister, Sadistic, Surprise, Service, WE ARE STILLE!
The hundreds of meme videos about the line above.

Kino no Tabi

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/35079/Kino_no_Tabi__The_Beautiful_World_-_The_Animated_Series

Expected rating: 7/10
First impressions rating: 9/10
End season rating: 7/10

Great season overall, with good art & animations as well as some really good music and soundtrack to boot. Voice acting was really good too, along with the general plot of this show being quite interesting. Despite what most will say, I find myself naturally drawn towards Kino and the countries she visit, and I would definitely watch a season 2 if it comes. Each episode contains their own lessons, scenarios, and things for us to think about, and although I wasn’t able to get much out of this show, the tranquillity was still a nice change from action heavy anime.

I would recommend Kino no Tabi to anymore who doesn’t dislike episodic anime which focuses on adventures.

One sentence conclusion: Kino’s Journey was very interesting indeed.

What’s stuck in my head:
Nothing really. This show doesn’t leave that much of an impression, despite being plenty entertaining by itself.
Actually, there is that one moment when the author of the original series’ message(a very inspirational one at that) was put into the end credits. Check episode 9. I really liked it. And yes, I love the ending song. It’s great.

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/34662/Fate_Apocrypha

Expected rating: 7/10
First impressions rating: 9/10
Last season’s end season rating: 8/10
This season’s end season rating: 7/10

Hm…this is…an interesting end to the series, to say the least. Being my entry to the fate series(and yet currently being the latest I have finished), I expected more to this show. And as many would blatantly say, this show was a huge letdown. The plot was getting weird at the end and I was actually even getting confused…which is not a good sign. Some characters also ended up not getting fleshed out.
However, it’s time to give some credit to the series. Although the story and plot was generally lacking compared to other Fate entries, it still had it’s redeeming elements. Or should I say, one redeeming element. Enter, Moedred(Mordred).
Moedred is literally what carries this show from the start to the finish. Her character is one that is very well made, and her interaction with her master is probably the one thing I enjoyed the heck out of. Furthermore, her character growths throughout, although subtle, was extremely pleasant to see.
Moedred aside, there are other things in the show that are actually really good. The soundtrack, for one, is an epic masterpiece. The one who composed it really deserves much, much more pay than whatever he/she is getting right now. Not only that, all the opening and ending songs(2 each) were very well done and pleasant to hear. The animations too, for the most part, was nice to look at and the fighting animations from episode 20 onwards just blew my mind…..
It was a very bumpy ride, but in the end, Fate Apocrypha remains a watchable show. One that I probably won’t ever rewatch, but a watchable show still.

I would only recommend this if you do not mind any of the bad points I have stated above.
Or if you really like traps.

One sentence conclusion: Bang, boom, pow! Moedred! Best girl 2017 is a trap!

What’s stuck in my head:
….nothing really. There’s the fight scenes near the end with big impacts but that’s about it.
Oh wait. Moedred.

Did not finish

Youkai Apartment no Yuuga na Nichijou

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/35220/Youkai_Apartment_no_Yuuga_na_Nichijou

Current progress: 17/26
Current rating: 7/10

……let’s just say the reason why I did not finish is due to my own negligence and procrastination.

This show is decent and is extremely underrated and doesn’t deserve half of the criticisms that it get really. It’s watchable. Plus, there’s the great opening song and now ending song for the 2nd cour by Lozareena.

I wouldn’t recommend it really, however, as it does have it’s fair share of flaws.

Boku no Kanojo ga Majimesugiru Sho-bitch na Ken

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/35712/Boku_no_Kanojo_ga_Majimesugiru_Sho-bitch_na_Ken

Current progress: 5/10
Current rating: 7/10

I like this show’s humour, and it is a good adaptation really. I am just really lazy and this show happens to be the least important in terms of finishing and thus…this situation happened.

I will finish this show sometime and give it it’s due review, just like Youkai Apartment.

Continuing into the next season

Mahoutsukai no Yome

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/35062/Mahoutsukai_no_Yome

Expected rating: 8/10
First impressions rating: 9/10
End season rating for this season: 9/10

This was a delight to watch, with stunning visuals, amazing soundtrack, insert songs that melt me inside, as well as a world that I really want to explore personally. I’m greatly looking forward to continuing to watch this series!

What’s stuck in my head:
The opening and ending songs, so gooooooooooooooooood.
Have I mentioned the insert songs yet? Well, they are GREAT!

Black Clover

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/34572/Black_Clover_TV

Honestly, I am just sad at this point for the series. I can’t believe the situation that Imouto Sae Ireba Ii. portrayed has come to life in the same season that the show was aired. This was a massive let down, and I was angry. To know everything about why I dropped this disappointment, check this post.

Code:Realize: Sousei no Himegimi

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/31456/Code_Realize__Sousei_no_Himegimi

This show simply didn’t fit well with me. Check details of drop here.

But hey, at least I enjoyed the ASMR voice & singing of the ASMR goddess Hayami Saori. I guess it wasn’t completely a waste of time.

Dies Irae

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/32271/Dies_Irae

Why did I drop this? I have no idea what was going on. Quite literally, I was lost for the entire time that I watched this show. Please don’t do this to your viewers. Here’s the details.

I actually really want to hear the full opening and ending songs, as well as the soundtrack, but they are region-locked…..WHY?!

Ousama Game The Animation

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/36027/Ousama_Game_The_Animation

Way to go, Ousama Game. Death games is pretty much my favourite genre and you were sadly a very big disappointment. Details here.

Missed out on

Net-juu no Susume(Recovery of an MMO Junkie)

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/36038/Net-juu_no_Susume

I’ve heard so many good things about this show throughout the season, I am pretty much regretting somehow missing out on it. Will probably watch this sometime when I’m free.

Ending words

Overall, this season has a mix of disappointments and happy surprises. It was a nice change of pace for me to watch several episodes at once, since I was busy halfway through the season, and I believe it will cause my opinions to be quite different than compared to others.

What did you people think? I would love to hear any thoughts in the comments section!

Anyways, this was all the reviews for the shows of Fall 2017. Look forward to part 2, where I attempt to rank all the shows and their components!

I would appreciate any feedback and discussion!
