Anime name: Ryuuou no Oshigoto!
2 things: This is unexpectedly really nice, and I might have to go study up the rules of Shogi soon.
Having a pretty bad predisposition of Ryuuou no Oshigoto, I entered with a very criticising attitude, expecting the worst. I got a positive shock when I was greeted instead by a really good anime that can very well become a good series if it continues this way.
General statement(tl;dr): Good start to the season, and correcting my prejudice.
So here’s my first impressions:
Nothing too outstanding but it is very consistent and very nice. Character design wise, I don’t see anything too unique, but who cares about originality nowadays really, as long as it works and it looks good.
Afterthoughts after discussing with friends: Nothing here.
Again, same as the art, the music has nothing too outstanding, with the exception of Machico doing the ending song. However, it is great, there are fitting tracks for every occasion, and the voice acting is done well enough.
Afterthoughts after discussing with friends: Still nothing here!
I honestly expected the worst. Why you may ask? Well, if you have no read my Pre-season preview for Winter 2018, here’s the first line from the source, the light novel of this series:
….now do you know why?
Either way, this was a lesson for me I suppose. Don’t judge a book by its cover, and don’t judge an anime by the first few lines of the source.
Now, back to the actual review. After my prejudice was corrected, the anime started to present the core of its plot: Shogi. For those of you who do not know, Shogi is a form of chess that is native to Japan. And….that’s actually all I know about it. I know very little about it, and yet I find myself drawn in by the actions of the characters, much like how people love to watch the Olympics and the FIFA world cups without actually knowing too much about the sports. It was entertaining, there is major room for growth, and I want more.
And yes, I want to go study up on the rules of Shogi now so that I can understand the situations a bit better instead of relying on simply seeing what happens next.
Afterthoughts after discussing with friends: The light novel didn’t win light novel of the year award for nothing, I suppose…
The first episode and we already have on our hands some very good moments of humour that made me genuinely laugh out loud. Granted, I’m an easily amused person, but that doesn’t discount the efforts of the anime. It was great.
Afterthoughts after discussing with friends: What do you do when 2 women(underaged girls) collide? RUN!
Ever wanted to know what the daily life of a professional Shogi player is like? Yea, me too. I’ve always wondered what the top people of mindsports do each day in their lives, since usually their major appearances is only at official tournaments. Either way, I’m interested for more, so yes, please give me more. Also, I love the interactions between the characters so far. Its dynamic and very lively.
Afterthoughts after discussing with friends: ….do the professional mindsports players just practice everyday just like sports?
Yet another special counter decided to appear this time. What can it be?
Special references counter: 9/10
Wow. Out of all the anime this season, this was the anime I least expected to get good references out of. There will be small spoilers ahead so scroll past this area if you don’t want to be spoiled even a teeny little bit. (But then again its the first episode so who cares?)
….Yup. Quality references there that I enjoyed thoroughly.
Afterthoughts after discussing with friends: I actually have a relatively shallow knowledge of anime in general, so I probably missed a few other references in this first episode alone. Hopefully you can find others that you get to enjoy too!
Overall: 7.75 – 8.50 (Pretty solid starting that actually makes me want to continue watching)
Afterthoughts after discussing with friends: Overall, what I wanted to say is that this anime has surprised me in a very nice way, and I want to see this quality continue. If it does, it’s going to be an enjoyable season ahead of watching Shogi.
….does anyone know Shogi? Can someone teach me the rules over here?!
*cough* Ahem. Next up for first impressions, we have: Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san. See you in 6 hours!
