Pre season preview: Spring 2018

hyouka spring
It’s time for anime to spam those sakura petals! [Anime: Hyouka]

The winter season is almost over. Along with it, the many good shows we’ve had this season. However, there is no need to fret! And the reason for that is pretty simple–the spring season is even more awesome! Why…? Well, after looking through all the shows available for next season and picking the ones I would like to watch…I realised I wanted to watch 23+ shows. It’s just that every show is promising and can be really good! Well, time to introduce these, and hopefully I can convert some of you to join me in this grand seasonal adventure for Spring!

Arrangements are in no particular order!

Boku no Hero Academia 3rd season

MAL link:
Expected rating: 9/10

It’s back! It’s already back! Well, the entire season 2 was pretty much building up lots of hype for season 3 anyways, and it did its job really well! How can you not be hyped? Knowing what’s going to happen in season 3 because I’m a manga reader just makes me all the more hyped, and it really doesn’t help that season 2 had some gigantic quality improvements over season 1, and we can pretty much expect season 3 to be so as well. Seriously, if you have not even tried Boku no Hero Academia for some reason and you don’t mind shounen shows, you really should. Don’t blame me if you binge both seasons at the same time!
Another thing worth mentioning is that UVERworld is singing the opening song…get ready for another ultra-hype opening song from BnH!

Expectations: Well, it’s anime of the year for like…all the categories! Can you even have bad expectations?

Shokugeki no Souma: San no Sara – Toutsuki Ressha-hen

MAL link:
Expected rating: 9/10

The second cour of the 3rd season of Shokugeki is here! Are you all ready for more foodgasms? More amazingly tasty looking food? And most of all…the arc that is coming next? I’ll just leave this here–the next arc for Shokugeki does not lose in terms of hype even to the giant that is Boku no Hero Academia. And hey, if there is anything that will drag @Shoka out from his grave, it will be Shokugeki or Saekano!

Expectations: Hype, hype, and more hype! Food, food, more tasty food!

Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online

MAL link:
Expected rating: 8/10

What is this scrub doing putting an SAO show on his plan to watch? Well, sorry to disappoint you, but SAO as a series is very entertaining, and me, being the completely shallow person I am, thoroughly enjoyed the series. I don’t see anything wrong with liking something that is entertaining, and furthermore, in the case of GGO alternative, it is not even part of the main series. In fact, it is a spin-off novel written by none other than the author of Kino no Tabi, Keiichi Sigsawa himself. The writing will no doubt be good, and with studio 3Hz working on it, the animations should be pretty good as well. Best part of it all? The addition of someone who has been missing from the anime industry for far too long–Aoi Eir. Her songs are absolutely amazing, and it was a shame that she was away for so long due to medical conditions. But now that she’s back, I’m very hyped for her returning debut in GGO alternative! Even if the anime turns out bad, I’ll still watch just for the song!

Expectations: Well written story set in GGO, with a godly opening song to give you eargasms!

Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii

MAL link:
Expected rating: 7/10

Interesting premise? Check. Good studio? Check. Rom-com? Check. Well, we have the recipe for an anime that can be silly fun. With a premise that sounds like some silly fun is in place, and A-1 pictures being in the reins for the production, I’m pretty sure this anime wouldn’t be the anime of the season, but it can very well be one of the most entertaining. Either way, I’m looking forward to it.

Expectations: Silly fun, romance, and some references to other series.

Persona 5 the Animation

MAL link:
Expected rating: 6/10

Persona has always been a game series I wanted to get into. Unfortunately, I have never in my life owned a console(does a really old PSP 3000 count?), and thus I have never had the chance to play a Persona game for myself. I have, however, heard many many good things about the series, and I personally look forward to seeing its plot unfold on an anime scale. And well, I’m done my research and I know how A-1’s adaptation of Persona failed last time so…I won’t have too much expectations I suppose?
My girl Aoi Yuuki is also one of the main VAs, whoo!

Expectations: ???Never actually known Persona series.

Jikken-hin Kazoku: Creatures Family Days/Shiyan Pin Jiating

MAL link:
Expected rating: 6/10

I was pretty pleasantly surprised by the appearance of this one. It’s a chinese web comic turned anime, and when I decided to check the source out for a feel of what this story could be like, I was greeted with something that is very like a manga. Either way, this has one of the most interesting plots, and furthermore, despite how it could just be reduced to a simple SOL, I don’t see a SOL tag on it. I’m looking forward to what this series could become.
*And come on, Akatsuki Rin is doing the opening song, so we’ll always get a good opening song…

Expectations: Hopefully something like The King’s Avatar in terms of goodness?

Devil’s Line

MAL link:
Expected rating: 7/10

Well, this is another series with some pretty interesting premise. In fact, it looks to be a Tokyo Ghoul that is more focused on forbidden romance in the middle of conflict. I’m not sure where exactly this will lead, but I want it to be good because of the potential the series has. Please be good!

Expectations: Romance + Drama + Tokyo-ghoul-esque plot = Probably good?

MAL link:
Expected rating: 7/10

This seems like it could be fun! It could be really fun! A isekai type that has a good premise for plot, as well as one that I’m personally interested in. Please tell me it’s going to be good! Well, there really isn’t much I know about this other than the synopsis so…
Hey, at least there’s the songs being done by the voice actors themselves, which is almost always a good sign.(In this case, Rie Takahashi is part of that!)

Expectations: Isekai that is possibly not trash?

3D Kanojo: Real Girl

Tiny picture!!
Much better now!

MAL link:
Expected rating: ?/10

Honestly, the only reason I’m going to try out this anime is because of the synopsis. It sounds like the clash of 2D vs 3D girlfriends anime-fied and might possibly make for one hell of a rom-com. As we would all know, one of the biggest in-jokes in the anime community is the existence of waifus vs real life girlfriends. Let’s all see they handle this…
Furthermore, has written a certain part in the synopsis that got me to decide to watch this show. See if you might be convinced by what they wrote.

High school senior Hikari Tsutsui is the quintessential “2D otaku” obsessed with the two-dimensional worlds that unfold in his gadgets and books. A bizarre incident leads him into a romantic relationship with the gorgeous Iroha Igarashi and his days of being wrapped around the finger of his carefree girlfriend begin. Join Hikari as he tumbles through the rough waves that beat the otaku out of him. This is sure to be THE comedy program of 2018 that you won’t want to miss!

Expectations: ???

Golden Kamuy

MAL link:
Expected rating: 8/10

I scrolled past this anime at first and didn’t even take a look at it, since it’s cover was a little underwhelming on first glance, combined with its semi-eccentric title. Boy was I wrong.
The plot looks pretty good. Not one that looks extremely promising, but has tons of potential nonetheless. Furthermore, the source material has a staggering rating of 8.38 (MAL isn’t exactly accurate on this, but there must be a reason that it’s so high), meaning that if adapted well, this shouldn’t be too bad. Plus, the studios working on this is studio Geno, who brought us Kokkoku from this season(and it was great!), so that’s another great part. Best part that instantly convinced me to try this anime?
Man with A Mission is doing the opening song!!!!!!!!!!! Please, give us another awesome song!

Expectations: A dark horse from this season, and another brainwashing opening song from MWaM.

MAL link:
Expected rating: 8/10

There’s quite a lot that you can expect from Hinamatsuri. First up, the very interesting combination of tags. A comedy SOL that is also Sci-Fi and seinen? Feels as if someone just randomly picked a bunch of tags to me! Well, after reading the synopsis, you will realise just why they put in all the tags.
What’s more, the studio working on this show is studio feel., now quite a powerhouse studio after making the Dagashi Kashi series as well as Tsuki ga Kirei. I am looking forward to just how well they can adapt here. Coupled with the fact that the source is again very highly rated, and you have yet another anime that could be a dark horse.

Expectations: From what I’ve read online, a fun and hilarious SOL.

Mahou Shoujo Site

MAL link:
Expected rating: 6/10

The main reason I took a look at this anime was because of just how much it was talked about on anime news network, and I was pretty surprised by what kind of…thing…this series is. At first, I thought it was just a Mahou Shoujo type of anime but I was very wrong, with this series being one closer to the likes of Madoka and such. Well, I’m looking forward to getting depression from watching this.
Also, this picture that was in the gallery. What even is this???

Expectations: A road leading straight to the valley of depression…

Dorei-ku The Animation

All these small pictures…

MAL link:
Expected rating: 5/10

After the massive failure that is Ousama game, I once again throw myself at a death game type anime adaptation with “The Animation” in the title. Why do I keep doing this to myself, I wonder. Either way, it’s in the category I love, it has a plot that could very well be very good…and I really don’t expect too much from this. Please, just for once, be a decent adaptation.

Expectations: Lots of NSFW things such as rape, murder, etc….

Juushinki Pandora

90499l.jpgMAL link:
Expected rating: ?/10

Hm…this would be a first for me. The first time that I willingly check out an anime featuring mechas and heavy use of 3DCGI. An original anime, no less. I just want to see what this anime is about, since it looks pretty interesting. Again, the conflict between humans and AI draws me in.

Expectations: ??? Shinji, get in the robot!!

Piano no Mori

MAL link:
Expected rating: 7/10

I’m going to be completely honest here, for Piano no Mori, I’m completely just blindly following the hype here. When the anime adaptation was announced, there were huge hypes due to how loved the series was, and I was intrigued by it as a result. And now, since it would be coming now, I would just jump on the hype train for once and allow myself be carried by it. Where this leads, I don’t know, but I hope it will be a fun ride.

Expectations: Musical type anime with plenty of room for drama.

Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi

MAL link:
Expected rating: ?/10

My blind pick for this season. There is not much information available on this anime at all–even its source has very little information available. However, I was a little interested by the PV as well as the synopsis, so I’m just going to give it a try. Hope for the best that it wouldn’t be a trainwreck!

Expectations: ??????

Captain Tsubasa (2018)

MAL link:
Expected rating: 7/10

Captain Tsubasa got a 2018 reboot, and it will become part of my effort to expand my horizons a bit and watch more sports anime after reading a certain post by a certain nice woman as well as another post by another nice woman. Is it hype? Definitely! I’m not a big football/soccer fan, but I definitely don’t mind watching it! I’m looking forward to a great time in this unfamiliar genre!

Expectations: He shoots, he scores! Whooooooo!

Lost Song

MAL link:
Expected rating: 8/10

This. This is the definition of something that needs more attention. Why do I say that? First of, Lost Song has an amazing concept. I’m pretty much completely sold on the synopsis alone. It has so much potential to be great. Just, so much. Second, this is a music anime, so of course the focus will be on music. And whadaya know, guess who is voicing the main character? Konomi Suzuki. The talent behind THERE IS A REASON, the talent behind so many of our beloved opening songs already, despite being really young. I am fully expecting to eargasm at least once during the entire run of the show. Lastly, we have the PV that was released, which showcases surprisingly some really good-looking 3DCGI. Ones that may or may not be able to compete with Houseki no Kuni as of the sneak peeks we were given.

Expectations: Great songs, great OST, enjoyable for ears.

Uma Musume: Pretty Derby (TV)

MAL link:
Expected rating: 7/10

Yes, I know it’s a game adaptation. However, after taking a look at the production studios and the PV, I’m convinced that this can’t be too bad. After all, it’s P.A. Works, and the PV looks pretty promising so far. I’m just looking forward to enjoying this show, not a masterpiece.
*Visually, it looks pretty great so far.

Expectations: Cute girls doing cute things, sports edition.

Hisone to Maso-tan

MAL link:
Expected rating: 7/10

I’m watching this anime because studio Bones is making it, and it’s an anime original. End of story.
*Well, the synopsis was pretty interesting in its own right.

Expectations: Bones quality will prevail here!

Souten no Ken Re:Genesis

MAL link:
Expected rating: Meme/10

Omae wa Mada Gunma wo Shiranai

MAL link:
Expected rating: 6/10

I was made aware of this series’ existence by @MagicConan. And well, I decided, why not check it out? It’s going to be 5 minute shorts anyways, so not much time will be wasted either if it turns out bad.

Expectations: Mindless comedy to make you bust a gut laughing.

Not watching yet(but observing closely)

Megalo Box

MAL link:

I’m mainly not picking this one up because of caution. It looks good from the PV so far, but I don’t believe I have an interest in boxing. Furthermore, TMS Entertainment has been relatively fluctuating with the anime they made, so I’ll just see how it turns out first before putting it on my PTW.

Mahou Shoujo Ore

MAL link:

Read this synopsis and tell me this isn’t ridiculous.

This story is about a 15-year-old girl who is a newbie idol in love with her best friend’s brother who is also a popular idol. But she runs into a scary yakuza guy and finds out that her mother was an ex-magical girl, and the yakuza guy was her mascot. Her love interest gets kidnapped by demons that look like burly men with cute squirrel heads. So she contracts the yakuza to become a magical girl, which in this story means she turns into a handsome guy in a magical girl outfit. On top of that, her love interest shows an attraction toward her magical guy form. Her best friend turns out to be in love with her and also becomes a magical cross-dressing guy to save her life.

Thus, their manager, who is a magical girl geek, then decides to turn them into an idol unit.

Well? Looks like it could be so bad it will be good, right? I must admit, I was pretty drawn in and wanted to put this on my PTW list right away. That is, until I saw the production studio. Studio…Pierrot. You…

Tokyo Ghoul:re

MAL link:

I…I just don’t know what to say. When the announcement was out that Tokyo Ghoul:re was getting an anime adaptation, I was ecstatic. The manga was one of the most enjoyable experiences, and I would love to see it get adapted as an anime. But, they then proceeded to announce that the studio taking care of production is studio…Pierrot. Now, I’m not sure what the anime committee was thinking, but this is just wrong. We have a director with a less than impressive portfolio, the same script writer for the first and second season of Tokyo Ghoul anime(which sucked when compared to the original), and we have the same studio that ruined season 1 and 2 of the original. I just don’t know what to say. Did they think that something would be different this time, that the anime wouldn’t be a trainwreck?

Either way. I don’t like it. What’s more concerning is that the ending to the second season of the anime, which drastically changed the source, will not be able to match on with how Tokyo Ghoul:re started. Let’s see how studio clown fixes its own mistakes.

Interested but unable to watch

High School DxD Hero

MAL link:

In this year of the sequels, we get yet another sequel to a big series: High School DxD Hero. Admit it, we all wanted to check this series out at least once or twice, it’s just that I’ve never gotten the chance to myself. And that is why I’m forced to sit out while everyone else enjoys this allegedly great series…

Steins;Gate 0

MAL link:

…why must fate do this to me. For the all famous Steins;Gate to receive a sequel even though I have yet to watch it…how cruel. Hopefully the rest of you enjoy the show, and you can tell me all about it!

End words

  1. Next season looks so amazing. I’m much more excited about it that I have been for a while. I don’t think I’ve ever been called a nice woman before. I like it! SteinS:Gate Zero and Magical Girl Site, I love the source material so I’m really looking forward to see how they adapt it. The continuing shows are all great and there are a few crime type/ urban action shows which I generally enjoy and a healthy dose of ridiculous!

          1. I went through all the Danganronpas in a row in the past months – It left me …peculiar. I played through P5 3 times in a row when it first came out. I loved it a lot. I’ll probably do a weekend bing and replay p3 to p5 in a row.

          2. Oooh! You are probably happy that it got an anime adaptation for next season then?
Well, if you enjoyed Danganronpa, I have a game series I want to recommend to you–Phoenix Wright/Ace Attorney series. It is absolutely amazing.

          3. Objection!
Your honour, this statement is clearly contradictory to the facts of the case!
Not only did the witness not provide any proof, she went on to accuse my client of being adorable!
            *Pursuit–cornered plays in the background

        1. Well, I usually drop anime pretty late so…I will just suffer for a bit, haha.
Unless of course, the series is bad from day 1 and loses my interest instantly. Which is pretty hard to do since I’m so easily entertained.

I would appreciate any feedback and discussion!
