Hmmm, how should I describe this series best…? In one sentence, it would probably be: Mediocre until the end, where interest spikes.
As for why, the reasons are pretty clear. The arts and animations, first of all, are very mediocre. Like, mediocre mediocre. There isn’t much to praise, there isn’t much to criticise. Character designs are also bland but passable. I guess the only reason it isn’t higher on my list even with good consistency is because of that jarring 3DCGI. It’s not bad 3DCGI, it just feels jarring for some reason.
The second reason is simpler. The plot itself. From the start up till the very end, the anime has only shown us a plot similar to SAO in a way(perma death of character, but not in real life), only driven home by something that happens around 3/4 of the way through. However, at the end of the episode, a certain reveal suddenly drove my interest up. I wanted to know what exactly happened and why it happened. If the plot was trying to be an Anohana mixed with SAO, I’m sorry, I didn’t even get the urge to cry, nor is this anywhere as entertaining as SAO is(you can call SAO trash all you want, it was entertaining). But still, that ending does give much hope and well, I’m gonna see where this goes. If it goes nowhere, a drop is coming, obviously.
Due to my personal love towards Aoi Yuuki, I’m going to say the ending by petit milady sounded great. And now because I’m an ass and I want to come up with something remotely interesting for you to read here, I shall tell you why exactly Aoi Yuuki is such a great VA.
First reason: Her voice acting itself. From the crazy Clementine from Overlord S1, to the sufferu protagonist Madoka from…Madoka, to even the fujoshi Arisa from Death March and everyone’s favourite frog waifu Tsuyu from Boku no Hero and lastly, even in video games like Fate:Grand Order, where she voices Okita and Shuten Douji, her voice range is incredible. Not only that, she voices her character REALLY well. I’m not kidding. She sounds completely different sometimes when she gets into character, not to mention she sings in character a lot since all the anime wants her to do openings or endings… And this, coupled with the fact that one of my favourite characters, Tanya from Youjo Senki, is also voiced by her, should be more than enough reason to convince you. If you want her voice in action, search up her many different voicing roles, and if you want her great singing in action(in character!), listen to Youjo Senki’s ED or Hakumei to Mikochi’s ED. Oh and, in Piano no Mori’s ED, which she sings, she sounds SO SO different. I could have sworn it was Hayami Saori that sang the song, but no, it’s my girl Aoi Yuuki.
But of course, that’s not the end of her talent, nono. She also draws really, REALLY well. Like heck, how many talents does this girl have? Here’s a sample, with her drawing FGO’s latest servant, Okita Alter:
Well anyways, that’s about all the time I’ll waste for now, ha. Hopefully with the addition of this this post was much more fun to read.
To conclude the first impressions off, I believe the anime has potential, but with the first episode it seems that they might just be wasting it. The ending does intrigue me so I’ll continue, but I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone else for now, especially if you have SAO withdrawal syndrome…
First impressions rating: 6/10
Most impressive part: The ending portion. Also the ED.
With that done, time to move on to the next anime? And what shall the next one be…?
Satsuriku no Tenshi! Alrighty, I’ve heard some things about this anime so far, so hopefully it’s not too bad…
See you in 6 hours!
