End season review: Winter 2018

Oops. A little late there as I kept on not finishing this draft despite being able to since a long time ago. Consider this a small pre announcement before I begin: 24 hours after this post goes up, the First Impressions train will start running.

sora yori mo ending.PNG
From the start to the finish, it has truly been an amazing season. [Anime: Sora yori mo Tooi Basho]
Winter season is over! While some of us may not have enjoyed it as much as Fall 2017, I enjoyed Winter 2018 just as well as Fall. Why? Because there were so many fantastic shows that entertain me to no end. From the awesome Sora yori mo to the heartwarming Hakumei to Mikochi, there’s a piece of the season for anyone.

Starting from this season, I will be removing the awards section completely. I don’t like picking favourites, I’ve never liked picking favourites, so making a top list just kills me inside. Instead, replacing that section will be a section where I conclude each anime in 10 words or less. Essentially, it’s the TL;DR for End season reviews, so from now on, if you want the shortened versions of everything(which I don’t really recommend, but if you really want to save time go do it), scroll to the bottom and read that.

Now, let’s get right into it!

Ryuuou no Oshigoto!

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/35905/Ryuuou_no_Oshigoto

End season rating: 9/10

Extremely pleasant surprise for me from this season, Ryuuou no Oshigoto! manages to be one of the most entertaining watches that I’ve ever picked up. It’s a very nice blend of shounen, drama, and SOL and yet manages to have some insanely good comedy mixed inside too. I believe a good comparison would actually be Shokugeki no Soma in terms of content delivery and execution of plot ideas. You see, Shougi is probably one of those things that can look very boring to bystanders like us who do not really understand what’s going on. However, the show manages to make entire situations extremely hype and tense, and overall make it a very enjoyable watch that grips you tightly, and although in the end you still have no idea what happened, you see the amazing result and you feel amazed. It’s just like Shokugeki and it’s over the top cooking and meals that leaves us gaping at how good the food looks, we are left dazed at the events that transpired in Ryuuou without actually understanding.
That might seem like a bad thing, but in fact, it is really good. The hyper and tense moments are some of the best in these series, and coupled with a soundtrack that can, again, compete with Shokugeki no Soma in terms of “shows without battles having insanely good battle OST”, we just feel the emotions throughout the show. (The track that played during the final “battle” was so good…)
The little loli bait aside, the comedy in the anime was great too, and I loved the references they have for the various other series, such as this walking copyright infringement of a character shouting out a move we Fate fans know all too well:

ryuuou no oshigoto excallibur.png
Excuse you?!

Or…this equally amazing scene that transpired between the father and daughter duo that completely references us gamers who play gacha games…

Come on, everyone wants some SSRs…not to mention it’s a limited edition! (I’m looking at you, Jeanne Alter fanboys from FGO.)

The comedy aside, this anime’s art department is nothing to scoff at either. With consistent and high quality animations, and a good art style, this might not have been much of a visual feast, but it’s still nice to look at with no obvious flaws to be found.
Overall, it was an extremely entertaining watch, one that I did not anticipate, but now I just really want that second season.

I would recommend this to anyone who wants to try these type of anime, and doesn’t mind a bit of loli bait every now and then. But hey, the show is self-aware and does make fun of itself sometimes so it’s only even more funny.

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/36548/Kokkoku

End season rating: 9/10

I was entranced with this show from the start to the finish. The completely brainwashing opening song, the equally great ending song, the good plot, and the way everything flowed, it just felt really good to me. I’m not here to be an actual critic, since I neither have the qualifications nor the talent, so, just judging from pure entertainment point of view, I have to say, this series was awesome. It was just absolutely awesome and I looked forward to watching every episode. Best part? It received closure in the same season, and nothing felt too rushed either so I suppose this was a great one time watch that will probably stay on my mind for a while.

I would recommend this to basically anyone really. It’s great.

Sidenote: Yes, I know the opinions on this show is very divided, and there’s a lot of mistakes from this show that others pointed out. But, let’s face it. The show never stopped being entertaining, and being the first (seasonal) show that studio Geno ever made, let’s cut them some slack.

Sora yori mo Tooi Basho

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/35839/Sora_yori_mo_Tooi_Basho

End season rating: 10/10

I refuse to believe this is over. I refuse to acknowledge that I cannot watch this show anymore next week. I refuse to accept the fact that I can no longer look forward to watching this show.
…but it happened. Sora yori mo ended. In the most spectacular Yorimoi fashion, I had happy tears as the show ended.

It was a great journey from the start to the finish, and I as the viewer had as much of a wonderful experience as the girls did. This is something I would call flawless entertainment.

I really cannot pick on this show. There just isn’t anything wrong, at all, for me to talk about. And if I were to say good things about the show, it’s kinda hard to tell you, because there are just so many.

Either way, a perfect season from a series I now adore. Madhouse, please, give us a continuation of sorts. I know the story ended perfectly with one season, but I really need more. I can’t stand not having Sora yori mo in my life…

Would recommend Sora yori mo to anyone who is not allergic to SOL shows. And even if you are, give it a try. It just might completely convert you.

Overlord S2

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/35073/Overlord_II

End season rating: 9/10

Well. Overlord is over. It is actually over. To me, it was a great season, and to some others, it was a horrible adaptation. Whichever way it went, you can’t deny just how entertaining it was. And I think one of the biggest thing about Overlord S2 is the fact that it got a season 2 in the first place, and an even bigger thing is this: We are getting a S3. Madhouse not only learnt how to count to 2, but they are counting to 3 as well? What is this madness? Furthermore, it’s coming at July, which really isn’t that far from here, A.K.A Summer 2018. I am looking forward to this so much…

overlord obsession.png
Oh Ainz-sama, grace me with your presence again soon!

I would recommend Overlord to anyone who doesn’t dislike isekais. The world building and the characters are some of the best I’ve seen.

Death March kara Hajimaru Isekai Kyousoukyoku

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/34497/Death_March_kara_Hajimaru_Isekai_Kyousoukyoku

End season rating: 7/10

It wasn’t the nicest adaptation, it wasn’t the nicest season, and there are a lot of things wrong with this anime. However, till the end, it remains watchable and just the ending song alone is really worth my time watching this anime. Not the best from this season, but hey, who could complain about something that isn’t necessarily bad?

I wouldn’t really recommend the anime, read the novels or the manga instead. They do a better job in general portraying the adventuring and the slices of life in the story.

Hakumei to Mikochi

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/36094/Hakumei_to_Mikochi

End season rating: 9/10

An amazing ending to an amazing series. Started off looking as if another cute girls doing cute things type of show, this time features two tiny fairies, Hakumei to Mikochi has consistently been healing my heart week after week. It’s just such a great heartwarming show and I loved every bit of it. It’s sad to see it go, but all anime has to end sometime. Please tell us there will be a season two next time, because it really feels so bad that this anime has ended.
With an overall amazingly consistent quality, Hakumei to Mikochi was enjoyable to the very end.

I’m sure most of you would like to see this show sometime. It’s just good for just about anyone, as long as you are not someone who craves for action and needs it in every show ever.

Sidenote: did a little research and found out this type belongs in the Iyashikei genre, a type of thing created to “heal” people. It certainly did its job. Such an underrated gem.

Sidenote2: No fanservice. Fanservice does not exist. Characters will not suddenly top up their moe points by 1000 just to act cute. It’s great.

Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/35889/Hakata_Tonkotsu_Ramens

End season rating: 9/10

Whomever made the creative decision to have the entire track be in jazz, well freaking done. It’s funky, groovy, and overall great. This show in its entirety deserves its OST, just like how its OST deserves the show. With a big overarching plot and many minor plots, it was a short run for a series that was completed on a good pacing, and yet it was so enjoyable I didn’t want it to stop, even though it was clear that it had to. As one of the biggest black horses for this season that was surprisingly nice, Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens was nothing phenomenal in any way, but it was entertaining as heck.

This is one anime I would recommend to nearly anyone as long as you don’t mind some gore and violence.

Violet Evergarden

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/33352/Violet_Evergarden

End season rating: 9/10

And so a show with extremely strong emotions and a large amount of hype finally ends. Throughout the show, I have cried so many times. However, I do not believe Violet Evergarden is a show created in order to cheap out sad moments and get our tears. In fact, everything feels very beautiful in the show. Not just art and animations, but the plot and characters, the events that happened, their own emotions and actions, all of it just feels so real and so beautiful. Sure, it didn’t exactly live up to the hype, but who cares about the hype anyways?

I enjoyed the anime for what it is, and I am looking forward to possibly more from this series in the future. A new project for the seasons was confirmed, and I want to know what it is.
Screw you for the ending cliffhanger though KyoAni.

I would recommend this anime to just about anyone. It’s not a masterpiece, but it deserves attention.

Takagi san

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/35860/Karakai_Jouzu_no_Takagi-san

End season rating: 8/10

A surprisingly good watch without me being aware of what it was going to be about. This is a simple, episodic type of show that is full of fun, hidden romance, and just general entertainment. There’s nothing outstanding here, but there’s nothing not to love about this series. I like it, and I will definitely read the manga now, looking forward to the OVA as well.

I would recommend Takagi-san to basically anyone who likes these kind of fun SOL romance types.

Fate Extra Last Encore

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/33047/Fate_Extra__Last_Encore

End season rating: 8/10

It…ended????? Well, it ended here. Probably the most disappointing cliffhanger in existence, just when the story really started getting intense and things all clicked into place and made sense, we were greeted by the end of a season as well as a 3 month/1 season wait for the next cour to complete the story.

That aside, this was a good run. Shaft did a great job, and so did Nasu writing an entirely original story for this anime adaption. I liked it, my heart is broken near the end and as with all fate stories, it really just isn’t nice to lolis. #notlikethis

I would recommend this anime to those who like fate and don’t mind dark themes.

Sidenote: I know the general reception around this anime is bad. I don’t know why, but I really enjoyed it. From the confusion at the starting till the revelations later on, it felt like a very enjoyable emotional roller coaster ride, and I don’t think Fate/Extra: Last Encore is that much worse compared to the other fate. Sure, the overall qualities is not as good, but it is as enjoyable, and that’s all that is important to me.

On Hold

Mahoutsukai no Yome

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/35062/Mahoutsukai_no_Yome

Rating: 9/10

What? I rated this 9 and I still put it on hold? Why?

…honestly, I’m not really sure myself. Is it because the awesome opening song was changed? Or was it because of the many other great shows I had to watch?

Whatever the reasons, I didn’t feel like continuing to watch the series, but you bet that when I get the chance next time, I’ll definitely go back and finish it.

Slow Start

MAL link: https://myanimelist.net/anime/35540/Slow_Start

Rating: 6/10

I don’t think this show is bad. In fact, when I watch it, it is objectively very entertaining. However, with the amount of saturation in terms of both heartwarming moments and cute things, the amount of entertainment I got from Slow Start this season was kinda bad. Furthermore, I had left it alone for quite some weeks and as a result I have to go through quite a few at once if I want to finish it quick, but with its episodic nature realistically it’s never going to happen if I don’t want to get tired of the show.

Therefore, I’m temporarily putting the show on hold while I wait for a good time to complete it.

Additional information: It is unfortunate. This show has quite literally become Jiggly Jiggly Heaven from Shirobako, with a literal meltdown and being cut off at episode 10, and the status of future episodes becoming unclear. The show itself had much potential, but with poor execution from the middle point onwards, and dropping quality, realistically it was never going to be done. For more information, check out the anime news network article here.

10 words conclusion

Death March: Semi-harem isekai about a programmer’s adventures and everyday life.
Fate/Extra: Latest entry in Fate that isn’t Fate/Zero or Fate/Stay Night.
Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens: A crossdressing assassin and a detective samurai in Hakata.
Hakumei to Mikochi: Two tiny fairies warm people’s hearts going about daily life.
Takagi-san: Nishikata gets teased by Takagi-san and overreacts every time.
Kokkoku: Time stop drama revolving around don’t mess with Juri.
Overlord S2: Noobs get completely destroyed by Nazarick. Princess is Yuno.
Ryuuou no Oshigoto!: Shokugeki Shougi edition, DLC includes loli scenes.
Sora yori mo: Four girls journey to a place further than the universe.
Violet Evergarden: Beautifully emotional journey of a girl writing letters. You cry.

End words

It was a great season with many great surprises, and although it may never repeat again, I loved it. Here’s looking forward to the things spring can bring us!

What did you manage to enjoy? Was there a show that I missed that you want me to watch? I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

Mid season review: Winter 2018

Although winter traditionally meant the coldness, snow and crops not being able to be grown, I find myself with a bountiful harvest for the Winter 2018 season. While other bloggers I know have been struggling with finding entertaining/good anime to watch from this season, for some reason I more or less find almost everything entertaining and therefore, I ended up with ~15 anime from this season that I enjoy. What’s more, there’s so many surprisingly good entries amongst them that I am just really glad that I picked them up for this season. Now, let’s review all of them as they currently are!

End season review: Fall 2017 (Part 1)

NOTE: Before this post actually begins, I would like to say that this is of course a VERY, VERY long overdue post. The fact of the matter is, I was waiting on Fate/Apocrypha.

imouto ending screencap2
I believe this endcard is a very good image for celebrating the end of a season. [Anime: Imouto sae Ireba Ii.]

The Fall season 2017 has ended. It was not exactly the greatest season, and it does has its fair share of bad shows and good shows. Regardless, I enjoyed this season, and I am really looking forward to the Winter 2018 season.

Because I did not do a mid-season review for this season due to busyness, this End season review will be a little more long-winded than usual as I do more thorough reviews of each individual show. Furthermore, to ensure that this post does not drag on for way too long, I will be splitting the awards/top lists to a part 2, and this part 1 will only focus on the reviews themselves.

With that said, let’s begin the reviews!

2017: Reflections, milestones and so much more

So, 2017 is over. Happy new year!

umaru celebrations
Celebrations! [Anime: Himouto! Umaru-chan]

I’ve actually been really busy these couple of days so I didn’t have time to plan out this post, but I do know the general things I would like to talk about here.
First up, let’s have an overview of everything that happened this year.

The overview

I started this blog in April of this year, and well, like I’ve said many times before, the aim when I first started this blog was actually to just be a dumping ground for long things I want my friends to read, and well, look how far we’ve come.

At first, the posts were semi-garbage level with less than well thought out reviews and arguments, and I didn’t bother to put in too much effort into those. However, things started to change when people other than my friends stumbled upon my blog.

When the first attention from outsiders was cast onto my posts, it was as if something had clicked inside me. And it was the very critical first follow from Sam Brewer that had me thinking: maybe, people other than my friends are actually enjoying the “content” I’m putting out there.(If you can call what I wrote back then content that is)

With that, it had an effect on me and I started to write posts after thinking more, honing my writing skills more, and putting in much more effort onto posting on my blog. It was still a side hobby of mine, but it became one that I somehow enjoyed quite a bit.

From May onwards, I made much more of a conscientious effort to keep on improving the way I write as well as the posts I write. Things started getting more and more fun as more people liked my posts, followed me, and even started commenting on my posts.

I decided to start checking out the community itself after June had come. Actually reading posts from some of my followers, I enjoyed them quite a bit seeing differing opinions as well as matching ones. And I started getting more and more involved.

Well, at the time, it was still just mostly lurking around and continuing to do my own thing.

And well, here we are now, 2018, and I’ve somehow gathered 42 followers despite my very irregular posting schedules as well as so many empty promises I’ve made.(I’m sorry, I’m seriously still working on many things such as the Koe no Katachi afterthoughts, but they just aren’t gonna be done anytime soon…) Thank all 42 of you so much for actually liking the content I write, because well, I didn’t think anyone would like it, really.

Writing has become a fun thing to do, and although it can be a chore at times to put out certain types of posts, I have found the after-post results very rewarding mentally and psychologically wise, with the positive responses, virtual thumbs ups/stars and things like that. The sense of fulfilment along with the knowledge that others have enjoyed what I wrote gave me happiness.

I do not intent to part with this happiness any time soon either, so expect to continue to see me in 2018, although things might get more and more hectic…(please don’t)

Anyways, that about concludes 2018 for me. I appreciate the growth this little wormhole of mine has gotten, and I love all of you.

Now then, onto the other things

Reflections/New year’s resolutions

  • Write more regularly on the blog have posts scheduled so that there wouldn’t be many vacant periods of no posts.
  • Continue the series of posts I start!!
  • Need to continuously improve my writing. I honestly can look back to my posts from things such as 2 months ago and cringe at it. As my skills improve, the quality will only go up, and such is the necessity for more enjoyment of my posts.
  • Revisit old posts and redo them before posting them again, since some of them don’t do the series enough justice…
  • Promise less and do more!

These are the reflections and new year’s resolutions(sort of) that I have right now. Hopefully, by the end of 2018, I can look back and say: “Wow, I’ve sure done a great job!”, instead of “Wow, I sure am a piece of sh*t for not following my own resolutions and reflections!”.

Hm… what other things are there.

Ah, right, my favourite moments of this year.

Well, I need to put more thought into that, so I will put up a separate post about it sometime. No promises when, but as soon as possible since I still have things I have to continue to do.

Lastly, let’s have some announcements and updates yet again! Whoo! Who doesn’t love padding out word counts with these meaningless things.

  • My blog has received many more award nominations ever since the one I did on uniqueness and loveliness. I’m going to have to do up posts on that, and well, hopefully I can make it interesting.
  • END SEASON REVIEW. IT IS COMING REALLY SOON. I wanted to release it before the end of the year but well, there goes that plan. I promise this is on top of my priorities.
  • Winter 2018 is coming! With that comes many anime first impressions and such. Be prepared!
  • Other things such as continuations of series such as Magnificent Manga and Reading into Novels are actually in planning/drafting stages. I just haven’t found the time to complete the posts, so yup, my draft numbers have only been piling up.

Annnnd that’s about it. Happy new year everyone! I hope all of us will enjoy the year ahead.

-An exhausted Plyasm

End season review: Summer 2017

Took me awhile to find good enough key visuals to use this time, and I definitely did a more sloppy job editing too because I had to rush it. Still, I got it done I guess. When I have more time, I’ll definitely give you one around the quality of the spring 2017 review picture. Either way, please credit me if you want to use this picture anywhere else, since I still painstakingly edited it. All pictures are sourced from key visuals, as always.

Summer is over! Along with it, the Summer 2017 season. It was a great season that started off with any people predicting a less than good season and ended with many in awe at some of the anime that came out. I honestly didn’t expect much from this season and the many pleasant surprises I got from what I selected shocked me. Autumn is starting right about now, along with Autumn 2017, which contains many anticipated sequels as well as new series. I hope I will be able to enjoy the next season as well, but with how busy I’ll be, I probably won’t be able to.

Anyways, onto the actual reviews!

Note: shows that are continuing onto their next seasons have their reviews done at Ep 12, when they usually take a 1 week break before continuing. Continue reading “End season review: Summer 2017”

Mid season review: Summer 2017

Ah… My second anime season yet, and already halfway through. Before I started the season, I honestly did not have too much expectations, and even thought the Fall season was going to be leaps better already. However, there were still many surprises and good things that actually came out this season, despite it being relatively tame. Now then, on to the summer season mid season review! Continue reading “Mid season review: Summer 2017”

End season review: Spring 2017

All pictures credit to their original owners(They are all from key visuals and official sources). I simply edited them together.(It took me a whole day so please credit me at least if you are using it somewhere🙏)

And… it’s over. This season will probably be one of the best seasons in a while. There were ups and downs, surprises and disappointments, but in the end all that matters is that we the watchers enjoy what was given to us, and I have to say I had a fun time watching, especially since this is the first anime season I am watching. I am definitely looking forward to the next season, Summer 2017, and I hope to be able to enjoy it as well!

Now then, onto the actual reviews! Continue reading “End season review: Spring 2017”

Mid season review: Spring 2017

What a season! As I predicted, Spring 2017 is a really good season with several great anime as well as other side anime that are not bad, not to mention the many unexpectedly nice ones. Since it’s already been a month since the season started, we more or less would know which anime are bad and which are good. So, without further ado, let’s get into the exciting mid season review!
