Collaboration: Rising of the Shield Hero Episode 1: Start of the legend

Hello, everyone!

It’s me! I’m finally back!

…you still remember me right? I haven’t faded into obscurity yet, right?

oreigairu teehee hachiman
Tee hee ekse dee~ [Anime: Oreigairu]

*cough* Back on topic. So Astral and I decided to do a collaboration together for this season. The initial idea what to do Shield Hero and 1 other show. After much discussion, we decided to do Dororo since the summary looking interesting. (And boy did we make the right choice)

So yup. The post of the first episode of The Rising of the Shield Hero(Kitsu Link) is on me, while the post for the first episode of Dororo is with Astral. So if you want to check that out as well, head over there via this link. (Check it! Please do! Dororo was amazing!)

This is going to be a rotation, meaning I would get the second episode of Dororo, and Astral will do the second episode of Shield Hero, and so on. (If you are just here to look at Astral’s words, they’ll be here, be patient)

Anyways, let’s get to the episode review ~

First up, there’s a set of common questions that we decided that we have to answer.
Before you check it though, let’s keep a “Astral is a copycat” counter, shall we?

Now, let’s begin!
Me of the past
The copycat
Me of the futurepresent

  1. What are your general thoughts for this episode?
It was an great episode for me. The animations, voice acting and soundtrack are all on par with Made in Abyss’ so far, and that is great news, since it is literally being done by the same studio, Kinema Citrus.
Kitsu link for Made in Abyss

Generally, since I’ve read the manga, I already know what to expect, but this brings back a lot of memories about the start. Very nice.
I have been following this series for so, so long. I started when it was still releasing as a webnovel, and i’ve watched it grow into a light novel series, and now an Anime. And I must say… I’m not disappointed. The show looks GORGEOUS, for starters. The music and the voice acting is on point as well; Kinema Citrus really knows what they’re doing. I’m super excited to get Raphtalia into the story as well, seeing as she’s got the same seiyuu as Mai-san from last season. Considering Naofumi is voiced by the same seiyuu as Sakuta, we already know they have chemistry, so i’m looking forward to seeing how they interact.

Even though I have no idea who this “Mai-san” is, I can tell he’s about as happy as I am, just that he used…bigger words. I hope most of you(yes you, readers! I CRAVE your comments) enjoyed it as much as we did and are also looking for more.
  2. Did the episode fit your expectations, and in which ways did it differ from it?(If it does)
Yep, it not only fit my expectations, it far exceeded them! I might just be biased, but come on, who can deny the general goodness of this first episode. What’s more, it’s a 50 minute special!

You know, I was expecting it to be good, and it sure didn’t disappoint. And to have a 50-minute first episode just to get us right into the thick of things… very, very good choice. It really brought back the way I felt when I first read the webnovel so many years ago… the nostalgia is so, so good.
Other than adding an extra sentence, I think we can all agree that Mr. Astral here did a little…borrowing yea? Heh.
Astral is a copycat counter: 1
  3. How does this episode compare to the source material?
Plyasm: I feel like there’s some differences to the manga, but then again, the manga isn’t the source, the web novel and light novel(probably light novel) are the sources. The one thing I felt was different was probably the scene where the 4 heroes all come together to match their general facts? Although, it might just be my memory failing me, I don’t quite remember that scene happening in the manga. Maybe it’s a manga only thing, maybe it’s an anime only thing, either way, it differs in that aspect.
(My memory is not reliable, at all)
Astral: This has got to be one of the best adaptations I’ve seen, at least in recent years. Not only is the overall quality outstanding, but it follows the original story extremely well, bringing back the same feelings I felt during my first reading of the story. The intro was absolutely spot-on.
Nothing much to say here. If there’s avid readers of the light novels out there, what did YOU think of the adaptation of the source? I’m interested, since I’ve never read the light novel myself.
  4. Which scene do you think other people would react to differently?
Definitely the entire transformation of Naofumi. The entire….fiasco before his transformation aside, I’m sure many people would be thinking that Naofumi’s change to a much more mean, realist person is jarring and just done “for the edge”. To me, it’s quite natural as an effect of what has happened to him.
I’m gonna agree with Ply here. I know the internet has definitely taken up the betrayal scene as a new point of controversy, but honestly, I’ve always felt like it was pretty fitting. I mean, Naofumi is a pretty trusting, kindhearted guy at the start, which makes the betrayal only cut deeper. And really… there are definitely plenty of scummy people out there who won’t hesitate to lie for their own gain, so it’s not even that unrealistic, either.
This is what it is. 😉
Astral is a copycat counter: 2
  5. Which character did you like the most this episode? Have they done anything in particular/changed?
As of this episode, it would be Naofumi. His realisation, from an otaku drunk on the ecstasy of a new world, to when reality hit him, really drove him the meaning of “character development”. Isekais might not be as idealised as we made it out to be.
Well, Naofumi is really the only character we’ve gotten to know particularly well, so… I choose the Weapon Shop Owner. Yeah, that’s right. Branching out here a bit. Anyways, he plays a very important role in the story. He’s the only person who doesn’t blindly listen to rumors, and treats Naofumi as a human, the only person to show him kindness in his lowest point. It’s fair to say… he may have saved Naofumi, in the end.
    Astral is a copycat coun-
Oh wait, he didn’t actually copy me this time? Interesting…
But I guess his choice was pretty top notch. Smith Bro ❤
  6. What’s the high point of the episode for you and why?

When “that” happened. When Naofumi was hit over the head by the hopes and dreams that he have had, which promptly knocked him out completely, and threw him into the valley of despair. The hints were all there throughout the episode, but Naofumi was too blind and naive. Poor boy.
Obviously the high point is the betrayal. It’s one of the driving forces of the episode, and the series as a whole. The emotional beating that Naofumi takes during this is immense, and affects him almost permanently. It’s a very important part of the story, and they did it right.Astral is a copycat counter: 3
You know, even if you paraphrase my points, it’s still my points. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
  7. What can be improved in this episode and why? (a.k.a low point)
If I really had to pick, it would probably be the pacing somewhat. Just a very small nitpick, I feel the pacing is just a tiny bit too fast. Maybe show more of the transition parts? It’s hard to pick out faults from this episode, ok!?
A low point… Was there one? This was a really good episode. If I had to pick one thing specifically… I honestly can’t think of much. I’m copping out.
*sigh* I guess I’ll add a counter for this as well.
Astral is a cop out counter: 1
Jokes aside, I think we are both probably wearing rose-tinted glasses for Shield Hero, since we like the series a lot. If you feel like there’s something that can be improved, let me know in the comments below.(In case you still don’t get it at this point, yes, I WANT YOUR COMMENTS)
  8. What situation/decision/action is the most relatable to you in this episode and why?
Relatable, huh…probably Naofumi’s naivity as well as the other heroes’ misunderstanding of Naofumi, to be honest. Dunno why, but I feel like I’ll make the exact same mistakes as them if this were to happen to me.
Naofumi’s anger. I think he was justifiably extremely upset by the betrayal, and constant poor treatment by everyone. At times when I’ve felt betrayed by people I trusted, I’ve also been extremely angry and bitter… I relate to that a lot.
Well, I would be surprised if…elements of my answer were to show up in Astral’s. I mean, it says relatable to you, and I’m not him, so…yea.
    OR AM I????(cue illuminati music)
  9. Pick a situation from this episode. If you were put in this situation, how would you have handled it?
The accusations part. I would have gotten myself killed after getting angry, no joke.
I really think that I would have acted pretty similarly to Naofumi in that situation. I’ve never been one to sit by quietly and let my name be defamed… probably not the best of traits, as it’s gotten me into trouble on multiple occasions.
Astral is a copycat counter: 4
Geez, stealing the same situation as me, eh? To be honest, I was deciding between the accusations and the shop haggling part for this. And by shop haggling, I meant Naofumi teaching the merchant a lesson with balloons.(Now that I see this, I feel like that was a weird sentence)
  10. Most beautiful scene?(screenshot)

True love

Shield Bro x Smith Bro ❤
JK, it’s probably this:

I really am a real sucker for these scenary shots.

I have to say though, there really a lot of screensaver worthy screenshots that can be made from just this episode.Kinema Citrus sure knows how to do that.
This is my favorite screenshot from this first episode. The solitary figure, in the fog and rain, struggling just to kill the weakest monster. It was very well-delivered and I enjoyed it a lot.

Very nice. Another desktop picture it is.

Well, I be damned. He really chose a nice screenshot. I was actually also deciding between this scene or the plains scene, but I figured I liked the overview better than the solitary forest.

And thus we end!
Spectacular! Here’s the counter tallies:

Tsk, tsk. I expected more from you, Astral. This was fun though….both to watch and to write about. It’s good to expand my blogging brain for the first time in….6 months(sorry)
Right. Here’s some other thoughts I had that couldn’t really fit into the common questions.

For one, Kevin Penkin is now my second favourite OST composer. Besides the god Sawano Hiroyuki, of course. He really outdid himself with the soundtrack of Shield Hero. It gave the proper feelings that the shield hero was feeling throughout the episode. From happiness and joy, to a sense of urgency when he woke up, up till the extreme betrayal and loss of faith in humanity.

And for two…did you know? The voice actor of the kirito look-alike loner who plays a VRMMO is Harem King Matsuoka?! What a perfect choice, and an amazing reference to…a certain anime. Did you also know? The voice actor of the Smith Bro is the same as the voice actor of Agil?
Illuminati actually confirmed??

With that said, I’ve been hyped for shield hero’s rise, and now he is, finally rising up!
Let us all enjoy the future Rising of the Shield Hero! (HEH PUN INTENDED I’M SO GOOD)

Can’t wait for more.

See you all in the next post!

End season review: Winter 2018

Oops. A little late there as I kept on not finishing this draft despite being able to since a long time ago. Consider this a small pre announcement before I begin: 24 hours after this post goes up, the First Impressions train will start running.

sora yori mo ending.PNG
From the start to the finish, it has truly been an amazing season. [Anime: Sora yori mo Tooi Basho]
Winter season is over! While some of us may not have enjoyed it as much as Fall 2017, I enjoyed Winter 2018 just as well as Fall. Why? Because there were so many fantastic shows that entertain me to no end. From the awesome Sora yori mo to the heartwarming Hakumei to Mikochi, there’s a piece of the season for anyone.

Starting from this season, I will be removing the awards section completely. I don’t like picking favourites, I’ve never liked picking favourites, so making a top list just kills me inside. Instead, replacing that section will be a section where I conclude each anime in 10 words or less. Essentially, it’s the TL;DR for End season reviews, so from now on, if you want the shortened versions of everything(which I don’t really recommend, but if you really want to save time go do it), scroll to the bottom and read that.

Now, let’s get right into it!

Ryuuou no Oshigoto!

MAL link:

End season rating: 9/10

Extremely pleasant surprise for me from this season, Ryuuou no Oshigoto! manages to be one of the most entertaining watches that I’ve ever picked up. It’s a very nice blend of shounen, drama, and SOL and yet manages to have some insanely good comedy mixed inside too. I believe a good comparison would actually be Shokugeki no Soma in terms of content delivery and execution of plot ideas. You see, Shougi is probably one of those things that can look very boring to bystanders like us who do not really understand what’s going on. However, the show manages to make entire situations extremely hype and tense, and overall make it a very enjoyable watch that grips you tightly, and although in the end you still have no idea what happened, you see the amazing result and you feel amazed. It’s just like Shokugeki and it’s over the top cooking and meals that leaves us gaping at how good the food looks, we are left dazed at the events that transpired in Ryuuou without actually understanding.
That might seem like a bad thing, but in fact, it is really good. The hyper and tense moments are some of the best in these series, and coupled with a soundtrack that can, again, compete with Shokugeki no Soma in terms of “shows without battles having insanely good battle OST”, we just feel the emotions throughout the show. (The track that played during the final “battle” was so good…)
The little loli bait aside, the comedy in the anime was great too, and I loved the references they have for the various other series, such as this walking copyright infringement of a character shouting out a move we Fate fans know all too well:

ryuuou no oshigoto excallibur.png
Excuse you?!

Or…this equally amazing scene that transpired between the father and daughter duo that completely references us gamers who play gacha games…

Come on, everyone wants some SSRs…not to mention it’s a limited edition! (I’m looking at you, Jeanne Alter fanboys from FGO.)

The comedy aside, this anime’s art department is nothing to scoff at either. With consistent and high quality animations, and a good art style, this might not have been much of a visual feast, but it’s still nice to look at with no obvious flaws to be found.
Overall, it was an extremely entertaining watch, one that I did not anticipate, but now I just really want that second season.

I would recommend this to anyone who wants to try these type of anime, and doesn’t mind a bit of loli bait every now and then. But hey, the show is self-aware and does make fun of itself sometimes so it’s only even more funny.

MAL link:

End season rating: 9/10

I was entranced with this show from the start to the finish. The completely brainwashing opening song, the equally great ending song, the good plot, and the way everything flowed, it just felt really good to me. I’m not here to be an actual critic, since I neither have the qualifications nor the talent, so, just judging from pure entertainment point of view, I have to say, this series was awesome. It was just absolutely awesome and I looked forward to watching every episode. Best part? It received closure in the same season, and nothing felt too rushed either so I suppose this was a great one time watch that will probably stay on my mind for a while.

I would recommend this to basically anyone really. It’s great.

Sidenote: Yes, I know the opinions on this show is very divided, and there’s a lot of mistakes from this show that others pointed out. But, let’s face it. The show never stopped being entertaining, and being the first (seasonal) show that studio Geno ever made, let’s cut them some slack.

Sora yori mo Tooi Basho

MAL link:

End season rating: 10/10

I refuse to believe this is over. I refuse to acknowledge that I cannot watch this show anymore next week. I refuse to accept the fact that I can no longer look forward to watching this show.
…but it happened. Sora yori mo ended. In the most spectacular Yorimoi fashion, I had happy tears as the show ended.

It was a great journey from the start to the finish, and I as the viewer had as much of a wonderful experience as the girls did. This is something I would call flawless entertainment.

I really cannot pick on this show. There just isn’t anything wrong, at all, for me to talk about. And if I were to say good things about the show, it’s kinda hard to tell you, because there are just so many.

Either way, a perfect season from a series I now adore. Madhouse, please, give us a continuation of sorts. I know the story ended perfectly with one season, but I really need more. I can’t stand not having Sora yori mo in my life…

Would recommend Sora yori mo to anyone who is not allergic to SOL shows. And even if you are, give it a try. It just might completely convert you.

Overlord S2

MAL link:

End season rating: 9/10

Well. Overlord is over. It is actually over. To me, it was a great season, and to some others, it was a horrible adaptation. Whichever way it went, you can’t deny just how entertaining it was. And I think one of the biggest thing about Overlord S2 is the fact that it got a season 2 in the first place, and an even bigger thing is this: We are getting a S3. Madhouse not only learnt how to count to 2, but they are counting to 3 as well? What is this madness? Furthermore, it’s coming at July, which really isn’t that far from here, A.K.A Summer 2018. I am looking forward to this so much…

overlord obsession.png
Oh Ainz-sama, grace me with your presence again soon!

I would recommend Overlord to anyone who doesn’t dislike isekais. The world building and the characters are some of the best I’ve seen.

Death March kara Hajimaru Isekai Kyousoukyoku

MAL link:

End season rating: 7/10

It wasn’t the nicest adaptation, it wasn’t the nicest season, and there are a lot of things wrong with this anime. However, till the end, it remains watchable and just the ending song alone is really worth my time watching this anime. Not the best from this season, but hey, who could complain about something that isn’t necessarily bad?

I wouldn’t really recommend the anime, read the novels or the manga instead. They do a better job in general portraying the adventuring and the slices of life in the story.

Hakumei to Mikochi

MAL link:

End season rating: 9/10

An amazing ending to an amazing series. Started off looking as if another cute girls doing cute things type of show, this time features two tiny fairies, Hakumei to Mikochi has consistently been healing my heart week after week. It’s just such a great heartwarming show and I loved every bit of it. It’s sad to see it go, but all anime has to end sometime. Please tell us there will be a season two next time, because it really feels so bad that this anime has ended.
With an overall amazingly consistent quality, Hakumei to Mikochi was enjoyable to the very end.

I’m sure most of you would like to see this show sometime. It’s just good for just about anyone, as long as you are not someone who craves for action and needs it in every show ever.

Sidenote: did a little research and found out this type belongs in the Iyashikei genre, a type of thing created to “heal” people. It certainly did its job. Such an underrated gem.

Sidenote2: No fanservice. Fanservice does not exist. Characters will not suddenly top up their moe points by 1000 just to act cute. It’s great.

Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens

MAL link:

End season rating: 9/10

Whomever made the creative decision to have the entire track be in jazz, well freaking done. It’s funky, groovy, and overall great. This show in its entirety deserves its OST, just like how its OST deserves the show. With a big overarching plot and many minor plots, it was a short run for a series that was completed on a good pacing, and yet it was so enjoyable I didn’t want it to stop, even though it was clear that it had to. As one of the biggest black horses for this season that was surprisingly nice, Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens was nothing phenomenal in any way, but it was entertaining as heck.

This is one anime I would recommend to nearly anyone as long as you don’t mind some gore and violence.

Violet Evergarden

MAL link:

End season rating: 9/10

And so a show with extremely strong emotions and a large amount of hype finally ends. Throughout the show, I have cried so many times. However, I do not believe Violet Evergarden is a show created in order to cheap out sad moments and get our tears. In fact, everything feels very beautiful in the show. Not just art and animations, but the plot and characters, the events that happened, their own emotions and actions, all of it just feels so real and so beautiful. Sure, it didn’t exactly live up to the hype, but who cares about the hype anyways?

I enjoyed the anime for what it is, and I am looking forward to possibly more from this series in the future. A new project for the seasons was confirmed, and I want to know what it is.
Screw you for the ending cliffhanger though KyoAni.

I would recommend this anime to just about anyone. It’s not a masterpiece, but it deserves attention.

Takagi san

MAL link:

End season rating: 8/10

A surprisingly good watch without me being aware of what it was going to be about. This is a simple, episodic type of show that is full of fun, hidden romance, and just general entertainment. There’s nothing outstanding here, but there’s nothing not to love about this series. I like it, and I will definitely read the manga now, looking forward to the OVA as well.

I would recommend Takagi-san to basically anyone who likes these kind of fun SOL romance types.

Fate Extra Last Encore

MAL link:

End season rating: 8/10

It…ended????? Well, it ended here. Probably the most disappointing cliffhanger in existence, just when the story really started getting intense and things all clicked into place and made sense, we were greeted by the end of a season as well as a 3 month/1 season wait for the next cour to complete the story.

That aside, this was a good run. Shaft did a great job, and so did Nasu writing an entirely original story for this anime adaption. I liked it, my heart is broken near the end and as with all fate stories, it really just isn’t nice to lolis. #notlikethis

I would recommend this anime to those who like fate and don’t mind dark themes.

Sidenote: I know the general reception around this anime is bad. I don’t know why, but I really enjoyed it. From the confusion at the starting till the revelations later on, it felt like a very enjoyable emotional roller coaster ride, and I don’t think Fate/Extra: Last Encore is that much worse compared to the other fate. Sure, the overall qualities is not as good, but it is as enjoyable, and that’s all that is important to me.

On Hold

Mahoutsukai no Yome

MAL link:

Rating: 9/10

What? I rated this 9 and I still put it on hold? Why?

…honestly, I’m not really sure myself. Is it because the awesome opening song was changed? Or was it because of the many other great shows I had to watch?

Whatever the reasons, I didn’t feel like continuing to watch the series, but you bet that when I get the chance next time, I’ll definitely go back and finish it.

Slow Start

MAL link:

Rating: 6/10

I don’t think this show is bad. In fact, when I watch it, it is objectively very entertaining. However, with the amount of saturation in terms of both heartwarming moments and cute things, the amount of entertainment I got from Slow Start this season was kinda bad. Furthermore, I had left it alone for quite some weeks and as a result I have to go through quite a few at once if I want to finish it quick, but with its episodic nature realistically it’s never going to happen if I don’t want to get tired of the show.

Therefore, I’m temporarily putting the show on hold while I wait for a good time to complete it.

Additional information: It is unfortunate. This show has quite literally become Jiggly Jiggly Heaven from Shirobako, with a literal meltdown and being cut off at episode 10, and the status of future episodes becoming unclear. The show itself had much potential, but with poor execution from the middle point onwards, and dropping quality, realistically it was never going to be done. Death March: Semi-harem isekai about a programmer’s adventures and everyday life.

Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens: A crossdressing assassin and a detective samurai in Hakata.
Hakumei to Mikochi: Two tiny fairies warm people’s hearts going about daily life.
Takagi-san: Nishikata gets teased by Takagi-san and overreacts every time.
Kokkoku: Time stop drama revolving around don’t mess with Juri.
Overlord S2: Noobs get completely destroyed by Nazarick. Princess is Yuno.
Ryuuou no Oshigoto!: Shokugeki Shougi edition, DLC includes loli scenes.

End words

It was a great season with many great surprises, and although it may never repeat again, I loved it. Here’s looking forward to the things spring can bring us!

What did you manage to enjoy? Was there a show that I missed that you want me to watch? I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

Beatless: Why?

Now that I am finally started to catch up with the many shows of the season, I realised just how boring some of the watches have been. And Beatless, is one of the prime examples.

MAL link:

Taking a closer look at Beatless, we can see just how much wasted potential there is. First up, the music and sounds of this anime is great. The opening song by GARNiDELiA, especially, is one of the great opening songs to grace this season. The soundtrack is also quite good and is able to bring out the mood when needed. And then, we take a look at the art and animation and realise just how much wasted potential there is as well. Smooth animations, great art and overall very aesthetically pleasing look makes this anime quite a feast for the eyes. The plot and story too, shows much interesting promise as it can make for another great discussion topic on AI vs Humans. Character wise, having hIEs being a thing, and even one being a main character makes for a very interesting cast that could have been expanded upon to make the story even more fun than it already it.

Well, with so much going for it, what exactly went wrong?

The overall execution. I’ve never personally read the source, but according to my friend, it was pretty good, which is the whole reason why I tried watching this show in the first place. However, it is quite disappointing to have the MC be this bad. After (somehow) getting himself into a life threatening situation, and getting saved by a hIE, his first response was not to ask or find out about what is happening to him. Instead, he chooses to bring his saviour to his house and…enjoy a dinner together? Why?

After the whole ordeal, they enjoyed their daily lives together. Again, why? You were literally just in a dangerous position, and yet you choose to stick around sucking your thumb after you got to safety, and passively wait for things to happen to you, not to mention the complete lack of thinking on the MC’s part. In fact, this MC is so 1-dimensional in terms of characterisation we might as well proclaim him braindead…
Either way, there’s also the stuff happening with his friends. One friend got into trouble, blah blah, and again, I really need to ask why on a lot of decisions being made here. There just really isn’t good enough reasons for 90% of the things happening in the show up to episode 6 for me to not question the actions taken by the characters.
E.G. Oh no I hate hIEs so I’ll put my life on the line to do some terrorist work against hIEs even though I have a family worried about me, a sister and friends who constantly tell me not to do foolish things, and yea, I don’t regret the decision at all… WHY?? These huge “why”s appearing in my head everytime there’s these stupid decisions basically ruined the show for me, as there seems to be a missing part of logic in the events that transpired that I’m not catching on to…

So yea, I’m lost and bored because of the plot, I don’t like the way some of the characters are written, the MC really needs to stop being so useless and stupid, and we also need to fix this weird SOL elements being mixed in between these grave situations. I’m not going to be around to see if it’s being fixed, but I assume not given how the rating on MAL keeps dropping…

So yea, Beatless is a bundle of wasted potential and regrets. Oh well, at least that opening song more than makes up for my time spent on it.

Final rating: 6/10
Verdict: “You have have forgotten, but you will die if you are shot.”

Märchen Mädchen: It finally became boring

What can I say? After being only borderline entertaining for quite a while now, Märchen Mädchen has finally became boring. With the latest episode 7, I saw how the art and animations started to break down, making some scenes look pretty hideous. As a result, my interest just plummeted and along with how boring the plot of this episode is I just couldn’t watch on anymore.

MAL link:ärchen_Mädchen

This series has its many faults, and I feel like I placed too much hope in it even though I never had any high hopes…which makes it even worse.

Art and animations started off as being pretty nice. Then, it just dropped. And dropped. And dropped. Until the unwatchable scenes in this episode, it actually still maintained a decent overall quality, but I guess production just couldn’t keep up… That aside, the character designs are actually pretty good.

Voice acting is pretty average, but the background soundtrack…is just lackluster. While I didn’t expect much, I would have liked if the OST helped to at least make the experience more enjoyable, but alas.

Plot wise… eh.
If done correctly, I’m sure this plot is actually pretty new and innovative but…why is it that the pacing feels completely off for me? I just got thrown off by the pacing most of the time, despite the story being actually pretty good. I don’t know exactly what’s wrong here, but something is wrong here.
And no, being typical and full of stereotypes doesn’t make the plot bad.

Well, at least the opening and ending songs are pretty nice. And it was good while it lasted.

With that said, I dropped Märchen Mädchen. Time to move on to better series!

Final rating: 6/10

Mid season review: Winter 2018

Although winter traditionally meant the coldness, snow and crops not being able to be grown, I find myself with a bountiful harvest for the Winter 2018 season. While other bloggers I know have been struggling with finding entertaining/good anime to watch from this season, for some reason I more or less find almost everything entertaining and therefore, I ended up with ~15 anime from this season that I enjoy. What’s more, there’s so many surprisingly good entries amongst them that I am just really glad that I picked them up for this season. Now, let’s review all of them as they currently are!

Grancrest Senki: Surprise! It’s me, Plot-kun!

What’s with this clichéd title? Honestly, I don’t know. At this point, I’ve run out of words to describe how painful a watch this is to my friends. Let’s just get this post over and done with by ranting a little(actually quite a bit).

Now then, let’s start off with the rants.

Anime first impressions: Fate/Extra Last Encore

Anime name: Fate/Extra Last Encore

MAL link:

This was a pretty bombastic first episode. I have no idea why that word is the one that popped into my head, but there you have it. It was what I expected in some ways, but completely deviated from my expectations in other ways.

General statement(tl;dr): It’s good, but…somewhat confusing in a lot of ways? But that’s something uniquely Fate so it’s forgivable for now. Continue reading “Anime first impressions: Fate/Extra Last Encore”

Citrus: Yea no.

Still confused about what exactly is the focus of this series, I’ve decided to drop it, not because of a bad episode or anything, but simply because I can’t stand this feeling of uneasiness while watching.

MAL link:

This anime is pretty good. In terms of animation and sound, it is visually nice while pleasing my ears all the while too. I really have no complaint for this series with regards to those two.

But, I can’t help but drop it. Ever since my first impressions, I have been having a bad feeling with regards to watching this anime. It started as a confusion over whether it is an ecchi anime or yuri anime. Then it turned into extreme confusion, and now with the third episode I really don’t even know anymore. Is this supposed to be ecchi? Or it’s pure yuri romance?

Whichever way it goes, I’m not really into either. Furthermore, there is something in this series that just does not sit right with me for some reason. I can’t pinpoint it but it has to do with the female MC.

…And I’ll now gladly drop this series to watch others that can entertain me better. If you are a fan of yuri romance, however, by all means, watch this series.

Final rating: 7/10
Verdict: “As of today, you’re expelled!”

Anime first impressions: Darling in the FranXX

Anime name: Darling in the FranXX

MAL link:

Darling in the FranXX. A name to compete with Hakata Tokotsu Ramens in terms of “names that makes no sense on first look”. Giant robots? Evangelion look-alike! Character design? As typical as possible!
…wait, what did you say? A collaboration between A-1 pictures and Studio Trigger?! SIGN ME UP!! Anime original? HELL YEA!

So…yup. That’s about sums up Darling in the FranXX. Thanks for reading this last first impressions!

Anime first impressions: Beatless

Anime name: Beatless

MAL link:

A less than impressive start so far, Beatless has to do a lot more than just looking good in order to remain on my watching list.

General statement(tl;dr): A pretty bad starting episode that leaves much to be desired.
